I miss my p3 dual setup a lot since going to p4. Now I hear that P4 Xeons can do dual. Is there anything to lose messing around with these? Did I hear right that vegas 4 doesnt support dual cpu's ?
Uhm, what you've heard about is probably HyperThreading, which is best explained by the CPU fooling Windows into thinking it's a dual CPU. I run this myself, and while it's not exactly like working with duals, it's pretty damn close. I have a 2.8 GHz Xeon, and it flows like... Something very flowy.
I started a thread a little while back about dual processor support in V4 (or the lack thereof!). It appears that SF has made some changes that pretty much killed all the advantages I had with my duallie (others shared the same experience). I do not believe that SF ever claimed true multi-threading in Vegas, but they used split the Direct X processing off to one proc and everything else to the other as I understood. I was seeing quite an improvement as I run tons of Direct X effects though sadly, that is not the case with V4. I was told by SF that they were looking at adding this back in one of the updates but I am not holding my breath. My big projects that ran smoothly in V2 bog down the machine in V4.
FWIW - I would hold off on the dual cpu box until V4 will take advantage of it (if ever!). I am quite dissapointed that SF went the way they did with this one.
