DV, HD, Widescreen - Newbie resolution help

Hi folks,

Newbie to video editing (done plenty of multitrack audio work for many years though).

I have some video clips from an old Panasonic NV-DS25A camera and I'm trying to make sure I'm using the correct resolution settings in my Vegas project.

Vegas imports the video and displays its properties as 720x575x24 PAL, which by my maths isn't 4:3, but also isn't 16:9.

I'm clearly missing something here and would appreciate guidance. The video *seems* to look better set to "PAL DV" (1.0926), than PAL DV WS but I've stared at this for sooo long I'm not sure what I'm looking at any more.

Help appreciated please! : -)

And feel free to point me to any articles, books, documents etc.

Spec for the camera is here: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/panasonic-nv-ds25-camcorder/1707-6500_7-30003220.html

Cheers

Xon

Just search for "match media settings" on this forum and follow the directions. That's all it takes. Then search "pixel aspect" to find out why SD PAL 4:3 and SD PAL Widescreen are both 720x576.

Don't forget to watch the free training videos if you haven't already done so:

These guys have some training materials you can purchase. Not free but I've always liked their stuff:

VASST and others also has free training tutorials on YouTube.
