JVC has a DV PRO tape on the market - about twice the price of the "normal" tapes. I looked on theirsite but no info as to why I should want to put out the extra cash. Anyone using them or know of any significant differance?
Have wondered myself and would love to know. Been tempted a few times but the price diff is pretty significant and I doubted that it was worth it. With that said, if someone here says that they are better and I thought it would add even the slightest bit of quality to my work I'd buy em in a heartbeat.
Since DV is stored digitally (of course!) then the tape cannot affect the general picture quality, however it can certainly affect the number of dropouts and the long-term durability. If you don't do much tape shuttling during capture/editing and you also don't reuse tapes, then you might never see any difference between the Pro and Consumer types.
As its DV NOTHING to do with the tape is going to make one iota of difference to the qulaity of the image period. However it could make a difference to the number of dropouts and how well it'll survive abuse.
One thing to be very careful of though is head gunge. Changing brands or even formualations from the same manufacturer can cause glue like stuff to form on the heads. In general if you're using dry lube tapes and stick to dry lube you shouldn't have a problem but switch between and and if you've had a few tapes through the drive best to clean the heads first to get the old lube off.
Fair bit of info on the Panasonic tapes over at dvxuser.com. Panasonic used to have an issue, the normal stuff was dry lube and the pro wet but I'm told they're all dry lube now.
