DV Rack direct to disk shooting

...any body doing this? I tested DV Rack this weekend and recorded a lot of very large clips direct to the hard drive through DV Rack. It was quite refreshing to NOT have to go through capturing and to NOT have to keep up with tapes.

I'm wondering If I just got lucky having no problems at all with it(even using a laptop with a mobile proc) all weekend or if the software really is that good.

The Canon XL2 also comes with fee software that lets you capture to the hard drive, although it doesn't have any of the other quality monitoring tools that are included with DV Rack. The capture software seems to work fine, although I did not carry out as many tests as you did.

I suppose this will be very useful if you don't need much mobility, and can be tied to a computer while shooting, or if you can find a small, light notebook PC that has a huge hard disk!

You can just use Vegas (or more specificaly VidCap) to do this. What you don't get though is all the RT monitoring which is what I think is the core of what DV Rack is all about. For plain capturing to a HDD it's a bit of overkill. For checking EVERYTHING it's the way to go.

And record to tape as well, if you're a belt and braces kind of guy.

Belt and braces??? <== What's that all about?

Two layers of security - a back up strategy - belt & braces.

(I think braces might be called suspenders in the States, but they're worn over the shoulders and keep trousers up.)

Yes in the US, we call that a "belt and suspenders kind of guy."

Remember Grazie that most expressions are culturally relative.

so - check where you are before admitting that suspenders turn you on.
