DV to HDV

New user also. Just bought the SDRHR12 and Vegas 8.0d Platinum.

1) If I record on HD FQ on the camera then edit a title with Vegas 8.0d in a NTSC DV project could I also use the same project but tranform it to HDV? Is it done by simply changing the project properties and than chosing the Make a DVD option from the toolbar, then burning the disc with DVD Architect?

2) Also could I burn an HDV on a regular DVD even though I won't be able to watch it on a standard DVD player (I have a SONY PS3)? How many minutes of HD video could I burn on a 4.7GB DVD?

3) Does DVD Architect allow me to compress the video to fit in a standard 4.7GB Disc? (If I have a 3 hour video for example).

Thank you
Tony

1. The best practice is to always set the project properties to the exact properties of the source footage. For example, if this is an AVCHD camera, you use the "match media" yellow icon on that dialog, and you set it right. Then, at the end, you can export in any way you like: SD, DVD, HD, whatever.

2. Read here how: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2008/02/23/create-a-blu-ray-video-in-plain-dvds-for-free/

3. Three hours won't fit I believe.

(Please Note: My answer below is NOT based on personal experience. I haven't tried this myself, but I believe it to be true...)

Regarding #1: If you have the intention of creating an HD (HDV) version of your project, and you have any titles or other graphics/photos in your project, then I think you are probably better off setting up your project as an HDV project at the start.

That way, all your text overlays will use a 1440x1080 size "canvas", and will be sharper in the end HDV output. Also, if you have any graphics or digital still photos in the project, they will be used at 1440x1080 resolution.

Otherwise, if you have a Std Def 720x480 project, all of your titles and photos will be rendered/composited onto a 720x480 "canvas", and then that 720x480 image will be used to create a 1440x1080 output file. This will probably result in a lower quality image than if 1440x1080 is used throughout the project.

(At least I think this is what will happen -- can anybody else confirm this?)

Of course, if your project is all Std Def video, and you only have a few titles overlayed, it might not be worth the extra effort and possibly slower editing/preview performance to make the project HDV to start. Just an option to consider.
