DV->Vegas->Mpeg2, how do I de-interlace?

Howdy,

I'm backing up some of my precious Laserdiscs to DVD, and I'm having trouble with interlace artifacts. I will be displaying the video on a progressive-scan monitor, so leaving it interlaced isn't ideal.

I've played around with the even/odd field first settings, but either way, I get horrendous combing during any motion. Is there an ideal solution inside of Vegas, or do I need to look elsewhere?

Render as>MPEG-2 template>Custom>Video tab>Field order>Progessive only

Combing can also be caused by the SOURCE footage not being marked as interlaced (and in that case, Vegas doesn't deinterlace it). Bring up the media properties for your source media and set it to lower-first or upper-first (depending on where it came from and how you captured it).

What format are you rendering to?

You can also experiment with Project Properties > Advanced > Deinterlace settings to choose either Blend or Interpolate. These give you different deinterlace algorithms; which you choose depends on the source, destination, and what kind of look you want.

Likewise, experiment with the Event > Switches > Resample setting, as it affects frame rate conversions.

I've deinterlaced interlaced DV to 60 full frames per second with zero interlace artifacts, so I'm sure we can get you what you're looking for.

How do you de interlace so every field gets a frame? Pal 25 FPS -> 50 FPS (field per frame?)

Thanks!

The "Interpolate" method syntesizes the missing scanlines from the ones above and below it.
