There is no difference.. An AVI file can contain video compressed with any number of different codecs. Windows looks at the FourCC code in the .AVI file header so it knows what codec to use to decompress the video. "dvsd" is the FourCC code for files compressed with the DV codec. FourCC codes for a bunch of video codecs are available here:
