DVD 2.0 Navigation bug

I have never had any problems with navigation on my Pioneer DV-525 player. It has played everything I have ever put in it, including discs created with MyDVD, MovieFactory, and DVDA 1.0.

However, I just created a fairly complicated menu based DVD, which includes both MPEG/AC-3 files placed directly in the menu, and then also MPEG/AC-3 files placed in a music compilation (so that they will play seamlessly from one video to the next).

I rendered this project to my hard disk and played the resulting folder in WinDVD. Everything navigated and played perfectly. I next burned a disc, and then played this disc using WinDVD, and it too played perfectly.

However, when I put the DVD in my set top player, on three of the eight chapters in the music compilation, the player freezes at the end of the chapter. Pressing fast forward and fast reverse results in a "disc locked" icon error message on the TV screen. However, if I press chapter forward or chapter back on my remote control, the player responds, and I can "unlock" the disc.

This behavior is very puzzling because, when I went back and looked at the project in DVDA, I realized that the end actions for "songs" in a music compilation are all the same, i.e. there are no end actions between songs in the compilation (the end action for the compilation was "most recent menu"). Therefore, why would the player "hang" on between some chapters in the compilation, but not others?

John,

Maybe a solution would be to be more specific regarding the end action ie 'MENU A" BUTTON "C"for example. The last menu used may not be specific enough, although it should be. Just a hint.

PS this is what I do and all seems to be ok at the minute.

I played around with the end action, and that's when I realized that, in a music compilation, this end action only affects what happens at the end of the whole compilation. The problem I had was between the individual MPEG/AC-3 files that make up the music compilation, and therefore I don't think the end action really has much to do with the problem.

Can you try burning to a different piece of media and see if you can still repro?

O.K., your wish is my command ...

I burned to a DVD-RW and had the same problems.

Thanks. Do you have access to any other set top players? If so, what brands (of set top players) and are you able to repro?

Unfortunately, at the moment, I only have access to a Pioneer DV-525. However, I sent to my client the disc that disc that had the problem, along with a note to press the chapter advance if the video stops. She has a Sony (don't know model). I'll let you know if she reports anything.
