DVD 5 Capacity

Three .avi files to render for for DVD project.
1) 16 GB 1:10
2) 12 GB :06
3) 3 GB :03
So that's about 1:19 total running time.
Don't usually do these longer projects, but it seems to me these should fit on 1 DVD 5, at least that was my assumption. Thought DVD 5 could handle 1:30 rendered to MPEG 2.
But I have to fiddle with the bitrate even to fit 1) file onto a DVD.
Don't want to have to go to two DVDs for this project as that will push replication over budget.

Cut bitrate back to 5.0 and everything fits.
Is this too much of a cut?

It's all relative and will depend on the footage. If the resulting DVD looks okay to you (and, well, to whoever will be watching it), then 5Mb/sec is not too low. If it doesn't look okay (...) then it's too low. ;-)

In order to abide by the DVD specs, the bitrate can be as low as, I believe, about 2Mb/sec. It would look pretty bad, but it is allowed.

FYI, if you're giving DVDA all AVIs, you may as well use the Fit to Disc feature to let DVDA decide on a bitrate. (It's in the Optimize DVD dialog.)

Assuming that you use 192kbps .AC3 audio, 1:19 of video would need a bitrate of 7,500,000 (7.5mbps) to easily fit on a DVD-5. At this bitrate, it should look great.

if you have a single core CPU, that's not a bad idea. If you have a duel/quad, you'll take a lot longer to render. DVDA only uses 1 core to render, Vegas uses multi.

you should use a bitrate calc to figure it out. @ 1:30:00 of video with 224kbs audio, 6.5mbs for the video is the max.

Think my CPU is dual core.
Anyway the 1:10 part of this project took 26 hours to render from the Vegas Pro 8 timeline.
A bit of colour correction and some audio FX..
