DVD-A doesn't burn to Sony GRX-670

I've got a Sony Vaio (GRX-670) with internal Toshiba SD-R6012 DVD-RW drive. When I try to burn the test project I get "Warning: an error occured while writing a file. Error 0x8004e0c8(message missing)." This error happens at the very start of burning.

The DVD drive's firmware has been updated to the latest and greatest (1S33), but the problem persists.

Now that Sonic Foundry and Sony are "one", I am hoping that this issue might get more attention.

Maybe it's your latest and greatest firware. I have the same exact laptop and last week I burned 3 DVD-A's and 5 DD5.1 DVD's. The firware in my GRX670 is as I bought it nearly a year ago.

Really? I have never been able to burn anything with DVD Architect on this laptop. Not with the original firmware, nor the two updated versions that I have tried. I always get the same "message missing" error at the start of burning.

You have the same Toshiba DVD drive in yours? Are you using Windows XP or 2000?

That's odd! I have never had any trouble burning anything with my GRX670. CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW it burns them all without error. Yes, as far as I know it has the original Toshiba DVD recorable drive. The OS is the Windows XP home that came with it. Have you tried another media manufacturer? A couple of months ago I had a 10 pak of Maxell DVD-R's that the drive didn't want to recognize. When it got to 4 out of 10 discs that the drive didn't recognize I took the pak back to the store. They replaced the Maxell discs with Sony discs and everything was fine.
I have a tip for you. When you go to burn a DVD the video will look a bit wahsed out on your GRX-670's LCD display, but don't change anything it will come out fine when you play it back on a TV. I made the mistake of making the video look great on the LCD display, but when I played the DVD on a player attached to a CRT it was way too dark. The moral here is trust your camcorder! Good Luck!

The drive works fine burning DVD's with Nero. It only has the problem with DVD-Architect. I've tried all sorts of media. Funny thing is when I first got this laptop the DVD drive wold not recognize any brand of DVD-R media. DVD-RW was OK, but when I put in DVD-R the machine thought the drive was empty. It took two trips to the Sony Service Center before they replaced the drive. I think I am just going to get a "supported" drive and hang it off the firewire port. DVD-RW drives are so cheep now it isn't worth my time trying to figure out why the forking thing doesn't work. I've wasted enough time on it allready. And without a "supported" drive, tech support is useless. They won't even tell me what the cryptic error message means.

Wow! That's too bad. I'm the other end of the spectrum from you. I've seen my GRX-670 dropped twice from 4 feet or better, but it just keeps on chugging. Burning multiple media types is its strong suit. I can honestly say I'm impressed. I guess we cancel each other out. I'd recommend a Vaio anyday, but you'll probably never buy another SONY again.

Oh, don't get me wrong: I love the GRX-670. I use it for multi-track audio recording with Vegas. (I used to lug a desktop system around town!). I just can't get the DVD-RW drive to work with DVD Architect. I can't get it to work 100% with Nero 6 either though...

It's probably just an issue of new technology just not ready for prime time. Can you imagine if there were compatability problems with hard drives? "Oh, we're sorry, but your hard drive isn't on our list of compatable hard drives. Our software won't work on your hard drive."
