DVD-A4.5 Pro = No Ext. Monitor Drivers...

kentwolf wrote on 9/13/2007, 11:15 PM
Well, I was trying to get back into DVD-A (from Encore) and when I install 4.5 Pro, no external monitor drivers were installed, thus, there is no option in the setup config to select an IEEE1394 device for external preview.

DVDA 4.0 had the path:

C:\Program Files\Sony\DVD Architect 4.0\Video Hardware Drivers

Therte is no "Video Hardware Drivers" folder in the DVDA 4.5 directory.

For testing, I copied the 4.0 version Video Hardware Drivers folder over to the 4.5 directory and all worked fine as I would have excpected it to.

Since I do not know for sure what 4.5 is supposed to install, I removed the temporarily added Video Hardware Drivers directory.

I uninstalled 4.5, then reinstalled it.

Still no "Video Hardware Drivers" folder.

Why not?

Thank you.

Yep. This is completely our mistake. It will be fixed in an upcoming 4.5a update.

Your work-around is a good idea in the short-term.

Can't tell you how embarrassing this bug is.

ForumAdmin, Any chance of this being Sticky until the next update? Having missed the origal thread, just spent considerable time trying to fix it.

Thanks

I just tried this fix. Now when I go to options/preferences/video device I do get an option for OHCI Compliant IEEE 1934/DV device (which wasn't there before).

However, it also now says "Hot plugable Device" and "Device Unavailable" under details.

I've hooked up an external monitor via standard monitor jack, not via firewire. I can use it for external preview in Vegas, but it won't work in DVDA. It looks like in the help files that it is required to external preview through firewire, is that right? It seems odd since I can do it Vegas...

Any help would be appreciated!

kairosmatt it would be nice, but like much (most?) other video editing software, DV out is all you've got in DVDA. OTOH you could probably extend your display onto a TV monitor, depending on graphics card/drivers/software.

Thanks MPM,
I'm not able to extend onto a TV monitor, but it would be cool to see it on an external monitor-like in Vegas (I've said that before, but I've just got that setup in Vegas and it is so cool for previews!).

On the other hand, there's really not much advantage to "previewing" your content on another computer monitor.

The point of external preview is to see how the content will look on a television, which has a few differences from a computer monitor. (In particular, the colors can be a bit different, as well as the viewing area.)

"I'm not able to extend onto a TV monitor,"
I'm striking out this morning trying to find references -- please forgive...

AFAIK most graphics/video cards with a TV out basically show the desktop on the connected TV. With ATI cards the catalyst control center allows you to maximize the video overlay on the TV (with some software), or you can duplicate or extend your desktop.using the TV as a 2nd PC monitor. I don't have much experience with GeForce cards, and couldn't find a lot of specific info, but judging from the "169.21_NVIDIA_Control_Panel_Quick_Start_Guide.pdf" it seems to generally work the same way. While mirroring your PC's monitor on a TV doesn't work as nicely as automatically maximizing the video window on the TV, I'd think that you should still be able to maximize the preview window/display on your PC monitor, with the preview filling the TV screen as well, And/or with the desktop extended, be able to drag the DVDA preview to the TV & maximize.

Maybe that will help -- as Rob posted the colors and display area really are different, so it's worthwhile to double check everything before burning. Wish I could be more help, but with my normal work-flow I render the DVD to hdd where I do any mods and testing -- the only preview I do in DVDA is playing 20 seconds or so checking chapters & sub sync from the timeline. [FWIW I figure no one's ever going to play the DVD in DVDA, so I'm interested in what it looks like from software like Power DVD.]
