DVD Architect 4.5a Problem

Jameson_Prod wrote on 1/1/2008, 2:16 PM
Got DVDA 4.5 problems. At first, I got he dreaded hang on closing the disc. Wanted a faster, newer drive so I purchased an LG 20x drive. (Was using a Sony 8x)

Since installing the new drive, I have burned several disc from a prepared project in DVDA 4.5. None of the disc have worked in 2 different set top players. The error message on insertion of the disc is "Incorrect Disc". They play fine in the computer and from the folder on the dirve. Due to time restrictions, I loaded DVDA 4.0 back on the computer and the project burned fine.

Since DVDA 4.0 works fine, I "assume" the problem is with DVDA 4.5. Is there some setting that has changed from 4.0 to 4.5 that I need to set or change?

Thanks in advance.

Try turning the record speed down a notch or two from the maximum.
The max numbers for recorders and media are "ideal" figures, thus you will always get fewer errors and more playable discs if you don't push the limit.
Also, the sage advice of "close all background applications, and don't use the network or internet" while burning, still holds.
Generally speaking, "bargain basement" media are going to give you more problem discs, IME.
Don't know why you are having problems with 4.5 compared to 4.0, but I've burned a hundred or so discs (+R) with 4.5 and not one coaster yet -- I have three set-top players to test them on.

These are the same disc that I have been using pretty much from the start....Taiyo Yuden DVD+R - 8X. Never had problems before with this media. I'm not using any other programs...even disable the screen saver as a general rule. I do always allow it to use the maximum speed though. I'll try setting that to a lower speed and see what happens.

As I mentioned, seems to be a 4.5 problem. Same media, same project, same drive settings in 4.0 and no problems. With 4.5, I haven't burned a usable disc yet!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Not being a smarta** -- wellllll, maybe I am so apologies... ;?P

Chances are you read and posted at Sonycreativesoftware.com using web browser software. You might have used Windows Explorer, or Word, or abandoned your PC altogether and used your cell, but you probably didn't... Why? Because your browser software is quick, easy, & designed just for web browsing? And coincidentally it's easier than using Word Processing software.

So if you elected to use a web browser, than why are you not using burning software?

That said, and I'm not saying that this is or isn't related to your problem, both burners and players can like or dislike different brands of media. Please don't assume that because one burner liked Taiyo blanks, another model (even if both were from the same manufacturer) will like it just as well. If you want to *see* how it performs with a particular brand of disc, try the free Nero DVD Speed.

RE: burn speed, some say it matters, others say no [I'm with the 1st group myself]. If you prepare your DVD to a folder on hdd, then it's easy to test at high speed, then cut a disc at something like 8x if it doesn't work -- at most you're out maybe 10 minutes or less per burn.

I appreciate your comments and understand what you are conveying. I do use "burner" software....currently Nero 8. It performs very well.

Since DVDA Pro 4.5 came with Vegas Pro, I was simply trying to figure why it wouldn't work. I "assumed" it was burner related or disc related so to rule those out, I loaded DVDA 4.0. In my first post I used the phrase "due to time restrictions" incorrectly. Time wasn't a factor other than my frustrations with DVDA 4.5 and the time I spent fooling with it.

Thanks again.

May I jump in here? Can I assume that 4.5 does not burn a DVD-R disc? It seems by this thread that to burn you need to use another burning program. I can do that, but what is 4.5 for?

You could try going to Options > Preferances > General in DVDA 4.5a and put a check in Skip Drive Database and autodetect Drive Capabilities and see if that helps.

Thanks ECB....I'll give those a try.

I agree SAM...that was where I was at. Sure I can create and burn the disc with Sonic or go back a version or other things. But what good is DVDA 4.5 if I can't burn disc with it?? I haven't tried -R disc. I've always used and had good success with +R and +RW. But I currently have a project that the duplication house the client is using requires the master be sent on a -R. I'll give it a try on 4.5 and just see if that makes a difference also.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions.

I agree that DVDA should be able to burn discs, as that's part of its spec. However, its major role is that of an authoring application, creating menus, playlists, etc. It's not the end of the world if you have to use another application to do the burning, especially as there are several excellent free applications, such as ImgBurn, that can be downloaded from the Internet.

Thanks Mike! :-)

I've owned/used Sony/Sonic Foundry apps for years, & actually have yet to try burning a disc with any of them. Then again I've never tried to create a DVD with the various burning suites I've bought either. ;?P I don't bear a grudge towards either sort of software -- I just prefer using a Chef's knife instead of the Swiss Army model in the kitchen. :-)
