DVD Architect and Sony DRU500-AX

vitalforce2 wrote on 4/28/2003, 11:30 AM

This subject was posted about a month ago but I didn't see one particular issue addressed. I just installed the Sony DRU500AX, which is an internal drive, and made a point based on earlier advice, NOT to install any of the software that comes with the drive, and also uninstalled InCD that came with Nero, and also deactivated Norton Antivirus.

As a result the drive not only writes fine, but even will rewrite a DVD+RW disc which it wouldn't do until I removed InCD and Norton Antivirus from the process.

The remaining problem, though not a deal-breaker, is that after DVD-A burns me a DVD, the tray automatically opens so the disc can be removed, but then the tray is dead. No amount of button-pushing or waiting will activate it. The DVD-A software keeps working (unlike before, when it froze rewriting a +RW disc), but the tray won't retract unless I reboot the computer. Any ideas?

I also have the Sony DRU-500AX. I only burnt 1 DVD with it so far and it with DVDA 1.0b. I have the latest firmware 1e on the drive. Like you, I did not install ANY software that came with the burner, none! However, I did have Norton Systemworks 2003 running while burning the DVD. After it was finished, the DVD was automatically ejected, I pressed the close door button on the front of the burner and kept working on the computer without any problems. What problems are you having exactly, I am not sure from your description? Were you able to close the door using the button on the front of the player?

The DVD that I burnt unfortunately couldn't play on my RCA desktop - not surprising since CD-R's don't play either, don't ever buy an RCA - but it played on my mother's Panasonic RD56 apparently. (I did not see it but was only told that it played OK so I am not 100% sure if the menues are working correctly.)

I take it for granted that you have the latest firmware. What OS are you using. I am with Win XP Pro.

Win XP home on a Dell 2.53. I'm assuming any firmware was incorporated into the "X" version of the DRU500AX. If not, is there a link you can direct me to? I know it's notoriously hard to find what you need on the obscure Sony sites.

Make sure you select the DRU-500AX and NOT the DRU-500A. The two are exactly the same burner functionally but the X is a more recent release. I read somewhere that you should make sure you don't update the AX with the A firmware. Anyways there is a box you can select which firmware you are looking for. Let me know how you make out.

(I am editor3333 by day)

Thanks and will do. I definitely have the AX. Appreciate your trouble.

Sure enough, even the brand-new DRU500AX firmware was only version 2c. Upgraded to 2e and that seems to have fixed it. Will test again tonight and report if any glitches.

BTW, upgrading also made the drive "visible" to both Dazzle DVD Complete and Ulead MovieFactory 2. Now I'm happy as a pig in slop.

Not that pigs in slop are always intrinsically happy. Perhaps, not knowing the comfort of a hot jacuzzi, they only think they are happy, yet plagued with a certain ennui.

Love my jacuzzi!

Let me know about your Sony since its "off" web forum, see me at szarkas at mcmaster.ca

Are these problems related to the internal DRU500-AX only or apply also to the external Sony DRZ 500-UL ??

Mine is internal.

I also have the DRU500 and have the same problem. Don't reboot. Just minimize the DVDA program and go into My Computer. Close the door on the Sony by manually pressing it in. Right click on the Drive Letter that represents the DVD recorder. Click on EJECT. The door will open and allow you to put another DVD in for recording. It should have the same results as rebooting.

Hope this helps until a fix comes around!
