DVD Artifacts and bitrates ...

I have two versions of a promo clip on a DVD

The first is 2 mins long and plays perfectly.

The second is 30 seconds long and uses parts of the same footage from the 2min clip.

Three parts of the 30 second clip, which were fine in the 2 min version, playback with significant "wavy line" artifacts where a straight line was - e.g the edge of a closing door, and the same with the edge of a circular iris transition.

Both were encoded in Vegas using the same settings.

Does anyone have suggestions as to how to get rid of these ugly effects?

I'm currently trying encoding with CBR of 6,000,000 - just trying anything in case it makes a difference....

I doubt very much that you used the same settings when encoding both. Make sure that you NEVER use the "default" MPEG2 template when encoding in Vegas, or you will get the problems you describe. Go back and encode both versions again using the "DVD Architect NTSC video stream" template at 6,000,000 bps (or higher). (Use PAL if you are in Europe, of course).

The Default Template uses terrible settings that absolutely ensure that you will get lousy looking stuff.

Thanks John

I definitely didn't use the "Default" but I'll try again ...

Just thought - the only difference between the same footage on the two clips is that on the 30 sec version I have a Turquoise gradient Cookie Cuttered as an oval so it makes a slight "frame" around the pic - could that have any influence on artifacts?
