What is a reasonable best choice between Plextor PX-712A 12x DVD+/-R/RW internal drive and Sony DRU710A 16x DVD+/_ RW internal drive.
I never burned any DVD...same price range. I want to burn from Movie studio 3.
I wanted also to straight copy from VCR-VHS cassettes, but were told it would be easier to get a DVD-VHS machine that would convert them but I would not be able to use this machine onto my PC.... as a DVD burner.... Sony customer service was quite helpul and prompty reply that it would my best choice.
So, one thing at a time.... Plextor or Sony.

My vote is for SONY. Just because of brand loyalty I guess.

I think the Sony drive is actually made by Lite-on, and you can get a Lite-on branded drive for less than the Sony. I have read Plextor drives are among the best out there, but typically range at the upper end price-wise compared to features. Plextor just announced a new model that finally supports dual layer media, so the 712's are coming down in price quickly, and I think there are rebates on them. Pioneer's are also a good choice and seem to rank consistently in the upper range.

Other popular drives on some of the DVD internet forums include the Benq 1620 and the newly released NEC ND-3500a. The latter calls specific attention to transferring from VHS to DVD, and includes a footnote about requiring an MPEG2 USP adapter installed in the computer. The balance of that conversion must be happening with the software included in the retail package (the 3500 was previously only available as an OEM drive).

I have no way of knowing if any of the drives I have just mentioned will burn directly from Sony's DVD architect software.
