dvd burner

I've been having trouble with my dvd burner and after endless e-mails back and forth with HP tech support they came to the conclusion that it needs to be serviced (I can buy a new one for the money it would cost me). It seems strange that it worked for awhile and after I downloaded Windows SP2 it stopped working again. But, HP has nothing to offer in the way of help so I may need to look at a new drive. I will not buy HP again since I only had it one and a half years. Any suggestions on brands and models. Right now I have Vegas 4.0 with DVD Arch. 1.0, but may someday upgrade. Thanks for any suggestions.

Lots of detailed reviews available at www.cdrinfo.com - pioneer seems to have the best compatability with DVDA though; possibly others, but its a roll of the dice.

There are dozens of posts in this forum on this subject. It is a very frequently asked question. Just do a search on "burner" and restrict the search to the subject heading and this forum.

FWIW, I have lost only one hard drive in over twenty years, including when I've run small companies. By contrast, almost every computer I own has lost either its CD-ROM or DVD drive. They are ALL made very poorly. By far the least reliable component in your computer. I have had good luck with my two Pioneer burners, including my 109, which other people didn't like. Most everyone seems to like Plextor, but I have no direct experience.

I would have to agree with the assessment of Videohelp.com in terms of best current DVD writer. I have a duplicator rack with eight NEC ND-3520A burners and they all work flawlessly. I too have Vegas 4.0 and DVDA 1.0.
Currently the lowest price is $39.99 from Newegg. Shipping is $4.00.
