DVD Burner Compatability

danziggy wrote on 3/6/2004, 6:26 AM
I need to purchase a new DVD burner. The supported Drive List leaves a lot to be desired, 1st or 2nd generation drives. Is anyone out there using any of the newer faster drives without having problems. I called Sony and they say they cannot support anything that's not on the compatability list. Can't understand why they won't make this product compatable with their own newer drives. Thanks

I have a Pioneer DVR-A06U and it's working fine. Your milage may vary, and keep in mind you'll be SOL for any drive related issues. Hopefully DVDA 2.0 will resolve a lot of the drive support issues with the newer drives.

Thanks for the response. Any word on release date for DVDA 2.0?

Just thought that I'd let you know that I bought a TDK 404N External DVD-+R\RW drive and it works fine! It's Firewire or USB 2.0.

Quite a few people use Nero to burn. It supports practically anything.

I would strongly recommend waiting until DVDA 2.x. Many people have reported problems with drives not explicitly supported. As you have already found out, Sony themselves admit that they only support a few drives.

Thanks to you all. I've decided to go with the Plextor PX-708A. Have been able to get information in the Forum that sugguest it works fine as long as you use -R or -RW.

In my case my new 530 was recognized just fine... but it burned DVD-R's that were incompatible with a wide proportion of players. This was a big surprise to me as I had previously had a 500 version and the same media burned in that drive just fine.

I replaced the 530 with a Pioneer A06 and my problem was cured.

Hey uhouse did the -r work???

I have the Plextor 708, and it does not burn for me at all. If there is a -R in the drive at DVDA start up, DVDA will not even show my drive. If I remove the blank -R and restart DVDA, it will show the drive, but as soon as I put in the -R it will not see the drive or its capable speed. The same thing happens if I put in a -RW. I don't have any +R or +RW to try on it.

The only suggestion I have is the one I gave earlier, namely to use Nero or some other program to actually do the burn. Prepare the files using DVDA, but burn in Nero.

Virtually every other program out there recognizes a huge number of DVD writers. DVDA seems unique in its pathetic lack of support for a wide range of devices.

I would assume that this will be fixed in the next release. I don't see how they can remain in the game and support so few devices.

I have a LITEON 815S and the same thing happens to me based on Davids experience, so I tried the +R and +RW and it WORKED great. Hope this helps.

Thank you all.

I have a Sony DRU 530A burner and have had no problem with DVDA recognizing it, but did experience playback problems in a two yr. old Panasonic DVD RV-32 player. Have only been using -R media. On playback,...I was getting audio mute, jittery pixelization, hesitation. I tried changing bitrates, and would burn at 1x, but still had problems playing in the Panny RV-32. I went out and bought a new Sony DVP-NS725P player and so far it plays flawlessly whatever I burn.

I also have a LITEON 815S. I've only burnt a couple of -R directly from DVDA with no problems at all (using G0F firmware and Win2K SP4).
