DVD Burning Software

I am wondering if I have the right software for burning DVD’s. My Dell machine has a NEC 4x DVD+R/RW CD-RW Combination Drive, and the Dell folks tell me that I can use the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Basic software that came with my machine for burning DVD’s.

I anticipate using DVD Lab for DVD authoring. According to info on their website:

“It is common that you are supplied with a DVD recording software that was bundled with your DVD-R/DVD+R burner. This software may be better optimized for your particular drive. The DVD-lab built-in DVD recording module is a general ASPI writing application and should work fine. In an ideal world, either one would work equally well.”

I see a hint of caution in using DVD Lab, and I’m not sure I’m all that confident in Easy CD Creator. I see that some folks use Nero and other burning software, but at $75-100, Nero 6 is a pretty hefty investment if Easy CD Creator and/or DVD Lab would do the job.

Has anyone had success burning DVD’s with Easy CD Creator 5 or DVD Lab?

I've had no problems burning with DVD-Lab and an NEC 4x DVD burner. I don't know if it's the same model as yours, though.

I have a Sony DW-U10A OEM DVD burner and have had no problems with ULead DVD MovieFactory 2SE (which does DVD, VCD and SVCD). I also use DVD-Lab and have had no problems with it either. Feature wise, I prefer DVD-Lab for creating DVDs.

The only problems I encountered in creating DVDs were using Memorex -RW media. Once I switched to Maxell media, things have been great.

The other problem I had was with a buffer underun problem, even though I had the settings set to prevent this. Once I upgraded from 256 meg RAM to 384, the problem went away.

This is probably more information than you were looking for...

I burned my first DVD yesterday (on my brothers PC) and the first thing I noticed was that his Plextor writer didn't like my Sony DVD-R... He tried with a Fujifilm DVD+R and that worked like a charm (using Nero, included with his DVD +/- R/RW.

Thanks, everyone. It was especially helpful to hear that not all DVD discs work equally well. That probably explains why I can't get Memorex Music CD-R discs to work on my Phillips CD deck, whereas TDK discs work just fine. Maybe it's best to avoid Memorex for the more sophisticated applications like DVD and Music CD-R.
