I have done this with an old Pioneer 4x using Taiyo-Yuden 8x.

I would suggest, however, that you use Nero CDSpeed to check the burn and compare it against the quality of the burn you get with the same media on your more modern burner.

I've not had any problems burning 16x DVD's at 4x (I have since started burning at 16x without issue). Those were/are Taio Yudens.

If you have the latest firmware installed in the burner, yes, and thats if they created firmware that would recognize 8x. Then again you can try it and see what happens. Have a fire extinguisher handy.

John, that's the problem, I don't have a "more modern burner."

It kills me to have to toss gear that still works perfectly. I'd rather not have to buy another, newer, faster burner just to keep up with the Jones'.

I'll check on the firmware, thanks! I didn't think of that.

EDIT:

The firmware did the trick, or so it claims (up to 24X). So now I have to order some faster media and try it.

Thanks again!
