I do a lot of web surfing and frequently I get detoured when looking for something else, I see something interesting then take a different path.

The following link in one of the cases, so I thought I'd share before adding to my web page links in the next update.

This is a really good study. I read it when it first came out, and it is the reason I use Maxell DVD-R.

Unfortunately the study is getting a little dated: I think the tests were done about 18 months ago. Media keeps changing (just as it has done with CD-R) and you cannot always be sure that what has worked in the past will continue to work, because manufacturers change their formulations in order to cut costs. I'm in no way suggesting that this information is not useful; actually it is incredibly useful. However, things keep changing.

The one variable not covered in this study -- and one that gets talked about here a lot -- is the impact of authoring software on compatibility. He used Scenarist in order to pretty much eliminate that variable. I don't think I've ever seen a study that just looked at authoring software's impact on compatibllity. Lots of people here have said they believe DVDA authors discs that are more compatible than cheaper authoring programs. I have absolutely nothing to offer that would challenge this, but I can't prove it either.

If anyone comes up with more studies like this, please post them. I find them amazingly useful, and I thank BillyBoy for posting this one.

alan,

Nice link. This study appears to have been done quite recently. I note that Maxell DVD-R media once again gets top marks, especially with the Pioneer A05 (which is what I have).

Thanks!
