dvd format from vegas pro

Hi all,
I am brand new here so be gentle!
Need some guidance from you guys, i have been trying to make a DVD (PAL format yes i am in the uk) and trying to produce a DVD to play back on a domestic widescreen tv. Rendering seems fine from vegas, i can output in many formats, DVD PAL seems correct. But every single time i try to prepair the content in DVD Architect 5, it needs recompressing and takes a long time. I need the correct settings to render from vegas pro to DVD architect. Is there a simple template i am missing?

Some other info, original footage is sony HDV, rendered to DVD PAL (i tried both 4:3 and 16:9).

Thanks.
Paul.

If DVDA needs ro re-encode the video files, then it almost always means that your bitrate is too high, making the MPEG file too large for a DVD.

Look online for a bitrate calculator.

Hi Steve, and thanks for the reply.
I am trying test footage like 10-20 seconds just to see if this can work. Its not too big for a dvd.

cheers
Paul.

If you are going to use DVD Architect you need to make sure you use the "DVD Architect PAL Widescreen" template (not the "DVD PAL" template) when rendering the video in Vegas. Then render the audio separately as either AC3 or WAV. Give the audio file the same name as the video file (except for the extension, of course). (DVD Architect expects to be given the video and audio streams in separate files.)

In DVD Architect, add the video file to your project and the audio file will be found and added automatically (since you gave it the same name). It should not require any recompression (unless you have made it too large, in which case you'll need to render it again with a lower bitrate).

Thanks Mark,
Ok I will try that. Separate streams, i never considered that could be a problem.

I will try and get back with results.

cheers
Paul.

It's not so much the separate streams, it's more the wrong template.

The "DVD PAL" template is intended for use with other DVD-burning software. DVD Architect does things in a somewhat idiosyncratic way, and requires the use of its own special templates.

Mark, thanks for that.
Would be nice (and faster) if Vegas had a rendering template that output video with audio directly to DVDA without separating A and V. You right, i have tried DVD PAL rendering with a different DVD authoring package and it works. No need to separate there. So shouldnt DVDA be able to too? Or maybe thats just me wanting something I can't have lol.

thanks
Paul.

One of the tabs in the DVDA template settings lets you set separate streams or combined in one file.

DVD Architect does it this way because it (unlike many other DVD authoring softwares) allows you to have several audio streams rather than just one. (For various languages, a director's commentary, etc.)

If rendering the two streams separately is too awkward for you, you can use one of the great strengths of Vegas - scripting - to do the work for you. Download the free DVDPrep script from VASST which will automate the process for you.

Hi Mark,
Ok, just tried a test and yes - its working. So many thanks for the direction, i was wasting time messing with formats but its clear now.
Of course, multiple sound tracks for languages, excellent feature.

My only remaining question here is this. Are the video and audio streams in sync all the way though the timeline? ie, say after some time, the audio is still in sync with the video. Lip sync etc.?

cheers
Paul

If they were in sync when they were prepared and rendered in Vegas then they should be (and stay) in sync in the final DVD produced by DVD Architect.

Mark,
Thanks, all seems to be working now, also checked the Vasst script, its works great too, and quite handy for basic single audio.

have to say this forum is excellent, hope one day i can return the help.

cheers
Paul.
