DVD gets choppy - what's going on here?

Hello,
I’m having issues with creating a DVD that will play all the way through. The video will play for 20 – 30 minutes, then it will start getting choppy and pixilated and be like that until the end of the video.
I’m using VMSP6 to create the AVI files. Then I’m using DVD Architect Studio 3.0b (build 93) to prepare the project and create an image. Then I’m using Nero to burn the image.
I’m new to all of this so I’m not sure if I’m following the wrong order, or if my formats are not correct.
I started by adding my 9 avi files to DVDAS3 then prepare, and burn. Same problem
Then I tried adding the 9 avi files to DVDAS3 then prepare, Image, burn (all within DVDAS3) Same problem
Then I created 1 huge avi of all 9 videos (15 Gb), Then prepared it, created image, and burned with Nero. Same problem, but I got about 10 minutes further before the video went choppy.
All the avi files will play perfect on my laptop.
As for the rendering, I’ve tried the default template and those avi files are choppy on my laptop.
Currently I’m using .avi & NTSC DV without any modifications.

Before the burn, I disconnect from the internet, disable Norton and all unnecessary apps, and turned off screen saver. Also I’ve set my laptop to run at best performance.

During the burn I’ve got the Task Manager open and my CPU never hits 100% and my memory is not getting maxed out either.

The files do live on an external drive. At one point I moved the avi files to my local drive, but it didn’t change anything.

I feel so desperate right now. I’ve been working on this video for almost 3 months now and I can’t get it onto DVD and have it play all the way through. I hope there is something obvious I’m missing. Please if anyone can help me or offer some advice I would really really appreciate it.

My laptop specs should be available from my profile. I haven’t seen them yet, so I may need to repost to get them up here. The basics are:
XP home – SP 2
P4 – 2.99 GHz
512 MB
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
QSI DVD+-RW SDW-082S

The disks I'm using are: Maxell, DVD+R

Sounds to me like the player is having trouble reading the disc. Possible reasons for this include:

1. The bitrate is too high. Burned discs are harder than pressed discs for players to read, so you can't be too generous with the bitrate. Keep it around 8Mb/s or lower.

2. The disc is dirty, scratched, or faulty. For the first two, check the colored side of the disc and clean it if it's dirty. If it's scratched, try another disc from the same batch. If neither is the case, you might want to try a different batch or even brand of media. Some players have a better time with DVD-R, and some do better with DVD+R. At any rate, you might want to consider burning your first copy of any project on rewriteable media first so you can give it a "trial run" before burning the final version. Saves you from using up a lot of blanks while you're testing.

3. The player itself has issues. Try watching the disc in another player.

Thanks Rob!
I just bought and tested some TDK DVD+R and my movie played like a charm!
