DVD Player compatibility

I've just seen an ad for the Sony DRU500 DVD writer which included the comment "DVD+RW and DVD-RW disks recorded on this drive may not play back on some older or entry-level DVD systems". My immediate reaction is that this is BS, but is there anything missing from "entry-level" DVD players that might make them less compatible?

I have this burner, It plays the dvd's in ALL my players. $80 orion, 2 pioneers, and a Daewoo...You may need to change set-ups for the right format but it works...however, see my new post. DVD rendering is my question! the_ripper

I believe the difference is in the lasers that are used to read the disks. Even some modern DVD players will only play either CD-Rs or CD-RWs because of the different coatings used between the two. The older machines have lasers that don't pick up data on CR-R/RW disks.
