DVD production app in the works?

Forgive me if this is old news, but in light of the recent thread begging SF to create a DVD production tool, I thought this would be of interest.

I was exploring the new features of ACID 4.0 on the web site, and I noticed a small italicized sentence at the bottom of the 5.1 Surround Mixing section:

"Coming soon! AC3 encoding and DVD burning utility from Sonic Foundry."

Color me intrigued.

Yes, it made me wonder as well. Any official word from a Sonic employee?

Please do Sonic Foundry so you can bust the strangle-hold that
Sonic Solutions has on the market.

I tried finding that excerpt you talked about, but could not find it. I wonder if they pulled it out. Hmmmmmm!

It was also in a quote from an e-mail offer for Acid 4.0 that I received yesterday.

The quote can also be found on the following page:

Thanks, that clears everything up. :)

Thanks, I see it now! I was looking in the wrong section previously.

I wonder if it will just be a feature set like the built-in VCD burning in VV3 or if it will be a robust DVD authoring app like RealDVD. Maybe somewhere in between?

HeeHee:

I think the key word from the statement that might answer that question is "utility".

That's too bad. I would love to see a SF DVD authoring app with chapters, menus and such.

...I don't know, I wouldn't give up hope HeeHee. I think of utilities as robust stand-alone applications. But I also think of folders as directories, so maybe I have my terminology lost in the 80s.

In any case, I'm sure it will be useful. Hopefully with a hint like that in the Acid new features section and a lot of people expirimenting with 5.1 that can't output to AC3, we'll see the "utility" pretty soon. It sounds like Dennis is excited about it, wants to say more, but can't. Any thoughts on when you'll be able to be more vocal, D?

[EDIT]

I'm now looking at an e-mail promotion for Acid 4.0, and there's an additional sentence that conflicts with our hopes:

"AC3 ENCODING/DVD Burning utility for ACID PRO coming soon from Sonic Foundry. This plug-in will let users share their 5.1 mixes on DVD."

So there you have it: plug-in. Still, will be convienient and rather cool.

Remember that the DVD standard has a standard for an audio DVD. Don't think just in terms of video DVD. The Super Audio CD is a 5.1 media, although diferent than DVD. Audio DVD's which are 5.1 will be popular (IMHO) before too long. People will not need a special player. The one difference is that DVD allows compression. Super Audio CD is 5.1 uncompressed. Even mastering it takes special hardware.

Just a thought.

What SF should do is make the best DVD burning utility ever made, which accepts every video format and audio format, is simple and logical, graphical, allows chapters to be dropped in on the timeline, imports subtitles, etc, burns straight to DVDr's, and then call it DVD Architect.

Then in about 12 months time when everyone owns a DVD burner, they need to dis-continue it and drop its support.

blackout.

Yes, I would like to be able to set chapter points while I'm editing, instead of writing down time codes and inserting them later in my authoring program.
