dvd+r

if dvda tells me it has successfully completed a burn on a dvd+r disk, which burn then plays properly on my system, but not in set-top machine, would that mean that the burn process was inded successful, and the playback problem must be with the set-top machine's inabalility to read dvd burns? if so, is there more of a compatibility issue w/ +r as opposed to +rw or the -r/rw?

There have been volumes of this issue written all over the net. Is your set-top machine compatible with DVD+R? I think if you go to www.dvdplusrw.org you will find a compatability chart.

It's my understanding that the -R/RW standard is more widely compatible. Although, I can't say for sure.

I have read that the +R was a litle more compatible. Emphasis on the "+".

Check out vcdhelp.com. It has a wealth of information from A to Z about making videos/DVDs. It even discusses the + vs. - wars. - was first, but + improved on the - standard.

Note: I had to buy two new set top DVD players in order to play my DVDs made on my computer. One was from the mid 1990's, which I did not really expect it to work, and the other was from about year 2000. I hear, I believe, that many set top DVD players must be manufactured after 2001 or so in order to stand a good chance of playing. I took a home-made DVD with me into the store and checked it out first.

Check out vcdhelp.com. They even rate the different players as to what media they will play. Extremely informative.

FYI: I bought two (2) new Philips players, Model DVD724, and they play just about anything; DVD's (+R & +RW), VCD, picture disks, etc. They are around $130 at Wal Mart.

...and there ya' go.

I'm wondering if there's an issue with the TAO (track at once) and "close the disk" settings that DVDA uses on the burn.

The reason for this is that burning with RecordNow!, the default is to not close the disk at the end of the burn. This causes my (laptop) PC DVD-ROM drive to reject the disk, and a "not playable" message on my set-top DVD player. However, changing the burn to "close the disk" results in the disk being readable on my PC and set-top player.

Interestingly, when I burn (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)with DVDA (with the patch that fixed the file dates), I am seeing the following issue: plays fine in my PC with DVD-writer and in my set-top box, but my laptop rejects the disk (like the "not closed" RecordNow! burn). Hmm....

ok, great feedback. thanks so much. i'll have to look further into these options. my box looks to be compatible w/ +r, though tdk so far didn't work. rather perverse that certain brands might work, others not. sigh. costly wast e of trial and error. nevertheless, onward!
one question: does dvda properly "close the disk"?
