DVD+R DL Not Playing

I used Vegas 7 Platinum and DVDAS4 to make a 7.2 GB DVD with menus, chapters, etc. Everything went as it should have (the only oddity I found was DVDAS4 asking me which layer to put some stuff on; I went with its recommendation). The burn went fine and the disc plays in the computer it was burned on (different drive).

However, when putting it in a DVD player it doesn't even recognize the disc. Shoot... The computer I'm writing this post with doesn't even recognize the DVD.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Intermittent playback is almost always media related. With DL blanks (even the individually packaged Verbatim), I've found I have to use 2.5 X with my LG burner to get it to work in some older players. That said, some players will not play *any* burned rather than pressed DL DVD.

Regarding the split -- at some point the player has to reverse direction reading your DL disc. There may or may not be a noticeable pause at this point. Ideally you'll adjust the split to a scene that minimizes the effect of any pause.

First, I would make sure that your burner is at the latest firmware level. Next, I would use Verbatim DLs and least until you have sucessifully burned a playable DL.Make sure the DVD drives on your other computers are speced to play DLs.

I have burned many Verbatim DLs and have had no playability issues with my Sony DVD players (one is 4 years old) or 5 computer drives (Plextors, Lite-on & Benq) but I have an earlier Panasonic that will not play DLs. Media is a major problem. For Dls I only use Verbatim and have had 100% success. I did try a free box (3) Memorex DLs and all three were duds. For single layer I only. use Taiyo Yoden DVD-R 8X. I use Plextor burners.

I've burned the DVD to folders on my computer, then used IMGBURN 2.x to burn DL's. My burner allows booktype setting -- so I set it to DVD-ROM (for +R DL discs). Check if your burner allows bitsetting (or booktype setting).

I'm with George on this one - it's likely the booktype causing the problem. +R DL media got assigned a new booktype, so as a result, even new players don't recognize the media.

IMO its absolutely manditory that you have a burner which allows setting the booktype (along with something like Nero to do the burning, since Nero allows you to control the booktype setting), or one that by default burns +R DL media with a DVD-ROM booktype.

How can I check the booktype?

"How can I check the booktype?"

If you google &/or check sites like CDFreaks etc you'll find all the info you need, including I think a couple utilities if needed. Basically what you're doing is setting the DVD up so that the player thinks it's another type of disc. To see if your burner supports this, go to videohelp.com, go to the DVD Writer section, plug in your drive #, and see if it shows info on the drive supporting bitsetting.
