you can check out stand alone player compatability with the various formats at www.vcdhelp.com

It isn't just the burner or format that count for compatability. You need to use quality media & good DVD authoring software as well.

Jeff, Pioneer's AO4 does this very nicely by writing a DVD-R disk which perhaps 85% of players can play - especially that $59.99 model Circuit City has been advertising recently . . . I checked - and it's 10 bucks cheaper than the cheapest VHS machine!
