DVD ripper wanted

ingvarai wrote on 12/18/2008, 4:03 AM
Ok, I am not going to duplicate any DVDs in an illegal way or anything in this direction. All I want is is to extract a certain scene from a commercial DVD.

I use VLC media player a lot, and it is rather frustrating to watch this application play back my DVD with perfect moving pictures - and not being able to extract the video stream to a disk file. A file I then can import in Vegas.

The VLC media has functions that allegedly does what I want, but the program crashes all the time when I attempt to do this, and if I happen to successfully save an MPG file, Vegas cannot open it. Although the VLC Player [of course] can play it.

If someone has any clue here, give me a good tip on what to do!
I also like to mention that I have tried at least half a dozen "rippers" and what they are called, some free, some which cost money - they just do not do what they claim they are doing. This "pattern" is rather significant - to an extent I start to wonder if such software really exist at all.

ANYDVD will do it. There is a full working trial offer on it.

You should be aware however that breaking copy protection of any kind for any reason is illegal in most Countries. You need to check your local laws.

Even having software to break copy protection in your possesion is an offence in most countries.

I don't understand? If you have it already, why RIP it? - Sorry I'm being dense here?

The http://www.magicdvdripper.com/Magic DVD Ripper[/link] is just about the easiest I have ever used. The interface is brilliantly simple and it's available as a fully functional trial. (I think you can rip 5 DVD's before registering)

most likely wants to put it in a family video or something.

cheap work around (if you can't find a decent ripper, I use dvd decrypter): use your video camera to tape an LCD monitor/TV.

many little things that computers are used for are illegal. Hopefully some lawsuits will give the public back some of their computer rights.

Another vote for AnyDVD. It's the top of the heap for sure.

You could also use SnagIt, but the video quality will not be native.

Im not sure if VLC will catch a stream from your DVD player to the monitor.

I have also used the FREE DVD Decrypter. I think it is part of the AutoGordianKnot package: http://www.autogk.me.uk/. It's been so long since I downloaded it that I don't remember if it is included or not.

Grazie, the reason i'd want this is that i'm building a video jukebox for my home theatre. I'll have a PC with some rather weighty hard drives connected to a projector. I'd like to be able to browse any movie in my library on the PC's screen and then with a click of a button play it on the projector without having to muck about with the actual DVD.

Another huge benefit is getting rid of all the previews and other muck that is so common on DVD titles so that when i click, the movie just starts playing.

There's two perfectly good reasons to rip.

DVDdecrypter doesn't work on the newer disks... any disk past 2005 I think it was. They were also shut down by the law so no further updates

Grazie,

TheHappyFriar hit the nail on the head, there is a short scene in a movie, about 4 minutes long, that relates to some fun in my family. What I will do is to rip those 4 minutes and mix it with footages I have from family members, together with fancy titles, music, and som other effects to boot.
This will be a surprise, of course :-)

Now, since they know I am a video freak, they expect quality, and at least I myself want quality. As soon as I can get those 4 minutes out of the DVD, the same quality as the original, I will be done with the project.

Use DVD Decrypter (it should work if you can still find it) and then drag the ripped copy to Vegas.
