DVD to Vegas to Itunes.

I have a gymnastics DVD another parent made of my daughter and his. I have Vegas 9.0 plat

I want to get it onto my ipod touch (and eventually his iphone)

I ripped the dvd with dvd shrink (I think) in to the Video_TS folder set up. I can play the folder with VLC player fine.

I took the 3 .vob files and changed the ext to .mpg and put them into a new proj in Vegas. It picked them up fine and the preview looked good.

I "Made a Movie" with the mpg2 output to a file. The preview flashed a number of times reading "No compression needed" which makes sense, mpg2 > mpg2. A 3.2 gb file resulted.

However, when I went to put it in Itunes, Itunes didnt even see the 3.2 gb file as a video file.

I tried to render again in the ipod mp4 default template, but the video quality was poor. The file size was 856 MB. So, a lot of compression took place

Is there a way to get Vegas 9 to output to mpeg2 (or mpeg2 quality) that itues sees? I don't want to lose video quality here.

I am unaware of MPEG-2 support for iPod.

Handbrake (free) will rip your DVD and convert it to an iPod template with good quality and a minimum of fuss.

Handbrake is an excellent program and I use it all the time, but I haven't used it to rip DVDs yet.

Your MPEG files should load just fine in Handbrake. You don't "have" to rip it again.

MPEG2 playback requires a license which costs money. Most any device that doesn't play DVDs won't have one in order to save money.

Also, MPEG2 files tend to be large for the amount of quality you get. Most any other modern codec will result in a smaller file for the same quality. Since storage space is at a premium in the small devices it makes sense to avoid the inefficiency of MPEG2 and save some money at the same time.

I've used the Handbrake transcoder to good use in the past. Another nice/free transcoder that will accept your ripped files is WinFF. WinFF has some presets for various iPod devices, and you can manually change frame resolution if you don't like the presets.

I would love to just send it to mp4 or whatever the Ipod likes without losing vid quality. However, when I used the default Ipod template, IT SUCKED.

Did I miss something, or do I need to tweek the settings?

Handbrake made this rather easy.

I just selected the Video_ts folder as the source in handbrake. I matched the video size and such. then, just told it to make an mp4. Vegas actually was not needed.
