DVD video cameras?

Has anybody had any experience using the new(ish) video cameras that record directly to a DVD?

I'm going to do some editing for someone who has recorded video using one of those cameras...but I'm not sure how the technology works: is the video recorded to the dvd as mpg2 files? as standard dvd format? digital avi? If I put the dvd into my dvd drive on the computer, do I use MediaPlayer or a DVD player to view?

Any info would be appreciated!

I believe that they do record in MPEG2 format, instead of the higher quality AVI. Be recording in MPEG2 you can just take the disc and stick it into a DVD player for immediate playback, no?

They are not "editing" friendly when it comes to getting them into the PC.

Where you can connect a miniDV camera via firewire and capture a DV-AVI file in full quality digital format, it's not that simple with the DVD recordable camcorders. When you finally do get the video on the PC, it will have to undergo another generation of rendering and compression, thereby lowering the quality of the video. I've also read where some have had trouble getting the audio into the PC.

In response to James, YES - the reasning behind the DVD camcorders was the simplicity of taking the disc from the camera and playing it on any DVD player.

It's a mini DVD disc though, it's not a full-sized DVD.

So, what is the format of the files on the DVD? Not VOB, I take it.
(Guess I'll let ya'll know when I get the disc, eh?)

Also, most probably the audio will be AC3, which Vegas won’t import. If that’s the case, you are going to need to find a utility that converts AC3 to WAV. I agree that these cameras are not “edit” friendly. That’s not their purpose and your friend might not be happy with the quality in the end because it will definitely be worse than the original.

There's a Panasonic camera that records to some sort of memory card (SD?). I think the audio is mp2.
