I have posted about this before, and I've have contacted tech support, but still haven't received any advice.
When DVDA 2.0 is preparing a DVD from a single MPEG and a single AC3 file, both prepared in Vegas 5.0a, the computer becomes almost completely unresponsive. By "unresponsive," I mean that even simple tasks, such as switching to another application, or clicking on the Start button, sometimes takes 20 seconds or more.
In other words, this is MAJOR unresponsiveness.
There is no rendering (other than the simple menus, which takes just a few seconds), just a prepare. I have tried preparing to a separate physical disk, and I've have prepared on the same disk that contain the MPEG and AC3 files. I get the same result.
The disk light is on continuously -- no flashing whatsoever, indicating that the disk usage is unbelievably intense. The CPU usage, as reported by Windows task manager, is only 1-2%, but the disk usage is unbelievable. I just did a prepare from a 4.4 Gbyte MPEG file and a 129 Mbyte AC3 file, and Windows task manager reports 68,408,267 I/O reads and 8,272,325 I/O writes. If my math is correct, there are about 4,500,000,000 bytes in my two files. If I divide this by the number of reads, it appears that DVDA is reading my huge files 64 bytes at a time. Can this be really happening? No software program could be that brain-damaged, but that is what the math says.
Both disks are IDE disks, on a fast subsystem. They are both connected to my Primary IDE controller. I have no anti-virus software installed (although I periodically scan, via the network to make sure nothing is going on, and I am quite sure the machine is not infected). I have checked for "Adware" and I don't have any. I have no background tasks running at all (I strip this machine clean), and I don't think I have configured anything unusual having to do with disks.
Every other application (including Vegas) works great, and nothing "takes over" my computer.
Has anyone else experienced this? I can't believe that DVDA -- especially now that it is in a second release -- could be this horrendously programmed. However, I have dozens of other programs on this computer, and none of them have any problems with the disk drives at all.
I would sure appreciate some advice. I assume it must be my problem, because there is no way Sony could have released a product that behaves this poorly.
BTW, I have a 2.8 GHz P4, 512 MBytes RAM, and two 120 Gbyte IDE drives. The motherboard is a P4PB400, and I have the latest VIA "4-in-One" drivers. I am running XP Pro (SP1) and have all the latest updates. I am running DirectX 9.0a.
