DVDA 3C - Set in & out points

Greetings,

I am trying to separate my DVD project into 2 DVDs by setting the in and out points on the timeline. I haven't had any luck burning to Dual Layer DVDs, so I want to break it into 2 DVDs. When I move the out point to about half the project, I get half the size project, which is great for burning the first half. For the 2nd DVD I want to move the in point to half-way into the project on the timeline so the 2nd DVD starts at that point, but the project remains huge with no reduction in GB size. The out point does change the overall size of the project, but moving the in point has no effect? Any trick that I am missing to avoid reworking the whole project to accomlish my goal of splitting it onto 2 DVDs? All help is appreciated. Thanks!

KM

Sadly, the in/out points merely tell where to start and stop the DVD playback. They don't edit the file at all. No matter where you set them, the entire file will still be prepared for burning to the disc.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. I have an 8GB project that I have burned the first half onto a regular DVD by moving the out point to the half-way point on the time line. When I move the out point, the size of the project reduces with every move towards the start. The project reduces to around 4GBs and only burns the first half. I figured the same would be true if I left the out point at the end and moved the in point to the middle to easily burn the 2nd half of my project. That does not happen.

Ultimately, it would be easier to burn the whole thing to Dual Layer, but I have not figured that out yet. Seems like I would have to flash my DVD burner with modified firmware, etc., and my confidence on that move is low.

Try moving that out point and see if you can reduce the burn to half project. It works for me. I just wish the same was true for moving the in point to the middle.

Cheers and thanks for your input,

I took the chance and updated my drive's firmware and voila (!)..... I can now burn DL DVDs. The original question about DVDA in and out points may be mute, but I'd still love to know for future reference if the in point can be moved with a corresponding reduction in project size. When the out point is moved it does reduce the size of the project being prepared to burn. Maybe there is a way to do the same with the in point. Thanks for your input.

...sometimes.

If DVD Architect has some (unrelated) reason to re-encode the file, then it will split it at the In / Out points:

1. If the file is not an MPEG2.
2. If the file is an MPEG2, but is not DVD compliant (according to DVDA).
3. If the file is a DVD compliant MPEG2, but the user has indicated somewhere (ie, the Optimize DVD dialog) to have the file re-compressed

If the file is a DVD compliant MPEG2, and the user has not indicated to have it re-compressed (and DVDA hasn't decided to do so for some reason of its own), then DVDA will burn the entire file to the disc.
