DVDA 5.2 has no option to format Blu-ray BD-RE

ECB wrote on 12/29/2011, 9:08 AM
When I try to burn a (blank) Blu-ray BD-RE DVDA posts the message "Please insert Writable Disc" with no option to format. The only option I can find is erase. If I format the BD-RE with ImgBurn DVDA accepts the disk. Encore burns the project wtht the same Pioneer drive and BD-RE disc with no problems. IF DVDA supports formatting BD-RE disks where did they hide it?

I haven't tried to burn to a BD-RE but I assume that it is the same as burning to a DVD-RW or DVD+RW. Just put the disc in as you would if it were blank. DVDA says that it needs to erase, is that OK? Say yes, and it erases, creates the necessary files and then burns. I think "formatting" and "erasing" are synonymous in this context.

That is what I expected but that is not what happins. When the Make Blu-ray screen appears the erase mode is greyed out, Burn disc is selected and Disc status is BD-RE Disc. When I select Finish DVDA posts the message Please insert a writable disk. The only writable disk DVDA will accept and burn is a formated disc.

Yes, DVDA will burn blank DVD (RW) discs with no problem. That is what I expected with BD-RE but it is not the case.

I just tried writing to a non-blank BD-RE. DVDA warned that the data would be overwritten, which I accepted. It then went on to Render, Prepare and Burn, with no mention of erasing (or formatting). Maybe if the disc had insufficient free space it would have erased.

Yes, DVDA will write to a non-blank BD-RE. That is not the problem. The problem is DVDA will not burn a new/empty BD-RE disc. I can format/burn the new BD-RE discs with ImgBurn or Encore. It seemed DVDA should also be able to burn blank BD-RE discs. Apparently not.

Ha! I see what you mean. The BD-RE I used previously had been written to by a Blu-ray Recorder. I just tried a brand new disc now with DVDA and was asked to insert a writable disc.

When I tried to open the disc with Win Explorer, it asked me how I wanted to use the disc: like a flash drive or like a CD or DVD (no mention of BD). I presume it would then format the disc appropriately, but I didn't procede any further.

I used DVDA Pro 5.2 133 for the previous test. I repeated it with 5.0b and it wrote to it as expected. Seems like a bug in build 133.

I erased the BD-RE using Explorer in Win 7. Explorer no longer shows any files but asks me how I want to use it, just like a virginal disc. However, when I go to burn a project, DVDA 5.2 133 says that it will overwrite existing data, so it is not in the original state.

SCS Support solved the problem. In DVDA go to Options > Preferences > Burning tab in DVD Architect and clear the checkbox marked "Use legacy disc drivers". After you clear the cleck you will be able to format/burn blank BD-RE disks.

Thanks for that. Now how am I going to remember it down the track when I need it? :(
