DVDA compatibility problems w/ DVD player?

guitard wrote on 2/26/2003, 7:27 AM
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the problem is with the disks I authored in DVDA.

I did all my video work in Vegas Video and then encode with Canopus Procoder. Everything went smoothly and the disks burned without a hitch.

However, when I put themm in my DVD Player (Daewoo DVG-4000S) about every two minutes or so, there was a micro-skip. They're very small, but very noticeable. It's only the video that has the glitch, not the audio.

I've never, ever had a problem with this DVD Player and it plays everything (NTSC, PAL, all regions, etc.).

I tried re-encoding, starting the project over from scratch, different disk brands, you name it. However, nothing worked.

I got a disk today authored by someone using DVDA, and low and behold, the same little micro-skips.

I think it's the DVD Player.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Randy

There is a similar problem with some Apex players. We are looking into this.

Randy, this is not the player!

This is clearly a DVD Arch. issue and a very serious one. I would really like to have more informations than "we are working on it" from SF technical peoples here... It is true that VEGAS/DVD-A is a truly great combination but this problem with DVDA is unacceptable.

The problem may be more or less noticable with different standalone players btw. No trouble with DVD-Rom drives.

My setup:
Vegas encoded VBR mpeg with DVDA A preset(8000 kb)(I will try CBR today just to be sure)
Vegas rendered PCM DVD compliant audio or DVD A encoded AC3 (this did not make any difference)
DVD Architect for prepare/burn operations
HP DVD 200i
Verbatim and HP DVD+R and DVD+RW disks

The skipping issue occur with
APEX AD 1500
Pionner DV-500

Sorry SonicSDB, i saw your post just after sending mine... There was really no flamming intention toward you in my previous comments , altough it may look like this... I appreciate your fast reply btw...

I must also precise after another check that this problem do not occurs with my Pionner DV-500, only with the Apex. That's the very first time i saw this strange behavior and never got it with Workshop or DVDit authoring in tha past. I will let you know my findings with other video encoding settings.

Yeah, I'm getting this too on two different Apex AD-1500 but no problems when using Ulead DVD Movie Factory.

See this thread:
Skipping Video

I'm also now seeing freeze ups and glitches when using an mpeg from the Main Concept encoder after about 15-20 minutes worth of video on these Apex's. These were encoded directly from V4 using the default mpeg settings meaning that I tried both the DVDA video stream and the standard DVD NTSC settings. In the next few days I'll put together another example of this and recapture from the DVD player but it's going to take longer than my other examples in the other thread because I have to put together a lot more video.

I also believe this bug has nothing to do with the player. I have also confirmed the bug on:

Sony DVP-NS715P
Toshiba SD2008
Dansai DVD955
JVC XV-N55

I have two projects with incredibly tight deadlines. I had planned on using Vegas + DVD. I purchased the program(s), created the videos and have created the DVD's, but they are useless to me because every time a chapter launches, it skips.

I ask: how in the world could you guys ever release a product with such an egregious bug in it? This is a terrible reflection on Sonic Foundry, and I'm afraid in spite of it being an outstanding program, Vegas and any related product have now been categorically eliminated from any consideration for use in product developement here at McGraw-Hill. Final Cut Pro and Premiere remain the only approved video packages.

That said, I'm still stuck with it. An indication of when the bug fix will be in place would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

Paul Banks

As they say in those Disney movies when a room full of 19th-Century scientists becomes a food fight: "Gentlemen, gentlemen!" You are speaking to engineers here, let's address the proper professional mindset and not give in to the stress of individual situations by broadcasting venom across a worldwide network. Just tell them what's wrong (thank God they follow these posts every day), be specific, and repeat the message if you don't get an answer soon.

By the way/way, what IS/IS the problem with these f/f/f---ing skips? Skiips?

ROTFLMAO! You work at McGraw-Hill? My God, if I had a nickel for every error that slipped pased your "editors" and proofreaders in nearly every computer related book you and other publishers dumb on the public I'd be filthy rich beyond my wildest dreams. The typical computer book if it contains examples of code has more errors in it than there are holes in a pound of Swiss cheese.

I have the Sony DVP-NS715P and I don't beleive I saw any skipping. When and where exactly does the skipping occur?
