DVDA2 only burns at 1x on Pioneer A05

I have burned several DVDs, both DVD-RW (Pioneer 2x media) and DVD-R (Maxell 2x media), and every time, DVD Architect 2.0 only burns at 1x. The 1x and 2x selections are both there, and I select 2x, and it accepts 2x, but the burn times are always one hour.

I have burned hundreds of DVDs, using both DVD Architect 1.0c and Nero 5.5. I have not changed anything on my computer, and not changed my drive.

Here is the relevant drive information:

Drive Information
-----------------
Drive : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105
Type : DVD-R/RW Combo Drive
Firmware Version : 1.00
Buffer Size : 2000 KB
Date : 02-10-10
Serial Number : BKDL035430WL
Drive Letter : F:Location : 1:0
Mechanism : Tray
Read Speed : 32 X
Write Speed : 16 X
[Edit]

I tried again with "Skip Drive Database" checked and it still only burned at 1x, even though I had 2x selected.

[Edit 2} I just took the same full VIDEO_TS directory, prepared by DVDA 2.0, and burned it to a 2x DVD-RW with Nero. It burned in 1/2 hour, just like it always has.

Hi John

Same thing has happen to me.

I've a A06 and have burned many 4x discs with DVDa 1 and Nero at 4x, but DVDa2 will only burn with 2x at the same media (Bulkpaq 4xspeed).

I get the opportunities to chose 4x, but it will only burn with a speed at 2x.

Same here. I have an A06 and I selected 4x just like I use to in DVDA1 but it burned at 2x. Seems like the workaround it to prepare the disk in DVDA2 and burn it in DVDA1 until they fix this.

I was contacted via email by tech support and they had me test a patch for this. They are not able to reproduce it in the lab, but they are aware of it. Hopefully they will feel confident enough in their patch that they will release it in a future version. In the meantime, I am burning using Nero.

For those of you that had problems with the "unallocated sectors" error messages in Nero when burning files prepared by DVDA 1.0, this problem has been fixed in DVDA 2.0.

I just burned a project from DVDA2 with DVDA1 and it burned fine at 4x. If tech support needs more people to test out the patch I would be happy to test it.

Click on the "Support" button at the top of the screen, and then click on "Email Suport." Send them a copy of your post and offer to test the patch.

I have had the same issue with my external Sony drive. Have 4x Mitsui media, select 4x, burns at 2x; consistently.

Send it in as a bug report (Click on Support at the top of this page and then select "Email Support"). Sony usually monitors these posts, but I am not sure whether there is a consistent mechanism whereby the moderators forward bugs reported here to the engineering team. By contrast, I think that the bugs reported through the support emails usually get looked at.

Just FYI...I'm having the same issues with my NEC2500 drive and 4x Ritec media. Could burn at 4x with DVDA 1.0, but now at a much lower speed with DVDA 2.0. What took 5:04 to burn in DVDA 1.0, now takes 7:06 in DVDA 2.0.

I have given up using DVDA to do the actual burning. Now that DVDA 2.0 creates valid VOB files, Nero no longer complains, and I therefore use Nero to do the burning.

John and others,

I was just emailed a file to use to to update my DVDA2, and that reduced my project burn time to an equal time as Nero. I have yet to test it extensively, but it worked on this one project.

Hopefully it, or something similar, will be included in a 2.0a release.

I got the same file and I also expect this fix will find its way into a future patch. However, I still use Nero because I almost always include data files on my DVD. This doesn't interfere with compatibility, and it significantly expands what you can do.

I strongly urge Sony to consider letting DVDA burn data files as well as DVD-specific files. I almost always include the JPEG originals of any still pictures I use, as well as MP3 or WAV equivalents of the sound files. Finally, I often include documentation in Word or HTML formats.

Just burnt my first disk in DVD-A 2, on A105, used a 4x disk but it took over 30 minutes to complete, so guess mine to is doing the 2 speed trick, normally in DVD-1 it took about 15 minutes

DOesn't matter to me because I always master at 1X then take the disc to the duplicator stack and do the runs there. Maybe there is no longer any point to mastering at 1X but it makes me feel secure. (Yeah, I know, I am a Luddite, but damn pround of it!)

I too have the 2x burn instead of a 4x burn with my external firewire Pioneer 106D. I emailed Sony yesterday. Ulead DVD burns the same vob's at 4x.

It is a bug; they have developed a fix. You can burn with Nero in the meantime (until they issue the fix as part of a patch release).

DVDA 1.0c will burn at 2x when set to 1x using Ritek G04 or Taiyo Yuden 4x. It will burn at 1x when set to 1x whenusing MCC 4x media however.
What are you burning at 1x Peter? If it is Ritek G04, I believe it is actually burning at 2x despite what DVDA is saying.

johnmeyer,

Are there any "tricks" involved in adding data files to a DVD burned with Nero? I am just finishing a project with family photos for a wedding reception. It would be better to include the scans and the music on the DVD rather than a DVD & CD. I know about the video and audio folders, what else is needed. Will any version of Nero work? I have 5.5.10 (I think).

thanks for your help.

Are there any "tricks" involved in adding data files to a DVD burned with Nero? ... I know about the video and audio folders, what else is needed. Will any version of Nero work? I have 5.5.10 (I think).

O.K., here is how I do it:

I use the last version of Nero prior to release 6. If you own Nero 5, you can download the latest release for free here:

ftp://ftp4.nero.com/nero551056.exe

This is version 5.5.10.56. If you have 5.5.10.XX, where XX is some number, you are fine, I am sure, with that version. If you don't own Nero, you can buy any version 5 on eBay for about $5 plus shipping, and then upgrade to the 5.5.10.56 for free.

To create the DVD, I start a new "compilation," select "DVD" from the list box in the upper left corner of the New Compilation box, and then select the third icon down the list, which is "DVD-Video." I then click on the "ISO" tab, and set "File/Directory name length" to "ISO Level 1" and "Character Set" to ISO 9660. Leave everything else unchecked. You can add a label (on the Label tab) if you want, but typically I just click on the "New" button after setting the ISO tab features.

After clicking "New," the left hand screen comes up with the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders already created.

You then navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVD Architect, and drag ALL the files from there into the VIDEO_TS folder in your new Nero compilation. You can then click on the burn icon and start burning. The whole thing takes less than a minute to set up, and unlike DVD Architect which is often sluggish, Nero is lightning fast, and very responsive (like Vegas).

To add data files, just create a folder off the root and add your data files to that. Don't ever add additional folders or files to the VIDEO_TS folder or AUDIO_TS folder. You can change the file settings in Nero to allow Joliet file names and allow file names longer than 31 characters, if you wish.

Quite frankly, I cannot think of a single reason why I would ever use DVD Architect's burning engine. In addition to the bug reported at the beginning of this thread, it provides terrible estimates of the time remaining; it burns unecessarily long leadouts on DVD-R media; it doesn't have a simple workflow for burning multiple copies of the same project (Nero just keeps asking you for disks until you have burned the number of copies you specified); and most of all, you cannot add other files to the DVD. I almost ALWAYS create another folder (called OTHER or PICS or MUSIC, depending on what I am doing) and fill up the DVD to its maximum. I find it almost criminal to have a DVD spend the rest of its life with only half its capacity utilized (since you can't add more information to it once it is burned).

Some purist is probably going to throw out a warning about compatibility (when adding files other than those created by the DVD authoring program), but I have never had any problems, and it would be a pretty brain dead player that would refuse to play a disk because there were other folders besides the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. Just make sure you don't add any of your extra files or folders to these two "reserved" folders.

What "extras" do I put on the DVD? I ALWAYS include the still photos, at full resolution, used in any picture compilation, or that were used in the video. I ALWAYS include the music tracks (at least as MP3s) in their entirity. I often include relevant text, such as session notes. If it is a copyrighted work, I include a full copyright notice, along with any other pertinent legal information.

Hope that helps!

I just got through trying this and the new DVD created by nero completly ignored the menu and starts the video. Anyone have any ideas?
johnmeyer wrote on 8/13/2004, 8:30 AM
Can you play the "DVD" by using the software player on your computer to play the prepared files directly from your hard disk? I always do this prior to burning, just to check for exactly the kind of problem you describe (navigation problem). While there can still be subtle differences between how it plays on your computer and how the actual DVD plays on your set-top player, usually these are in the realm of how the remote control works when crossing titleset boundaries.

I cannot think of how Nero could introduce an error that would cause the initial menu to be skipped. I bet the problem was already there, before the disk was burned.
bpeterson wrote on 8/13/2004, 4:03 PM
Well this is really strange.. I tried it from the hard drive using powerDVD and it works fine. The DVD itself seems to work when I put it into the computer too. However, the menu is still skipped when I put it into the DVD player. But if I press 'menu' on the remote, I then see the menu.. I would think it was my player, but I've tried DVDs that I bought and they work fine.. really strange.
bpeterson wrote on 8/18/2004, 4:15 PM
Update:
Still no luck with NERO. However, using DVDA and my old burner, everything works fine. The menu shows up on my player instead of starting the movie. If anyone has any ideas I'm open for suggestions.. oh and also I'm using DVDA 1 not 2.

Thanks!
