Actually, except for the lack of preview, it works exceedingly well. I particularly like the flowchart-style, "Connections" window. This software looks very promising.
I was a little disappointed that it had no MPEG-II encoder, meaning that any motion backgrounds or motion buttons would have to be prepared in a separate app. I guess once you're used to that workflow, however, it wouldn't be too bad.
It seems the design philosophy of DVDLab is aimed towards DVD authors who want to tweek things on a finer level than the all-in-one authoring programs generally allow.
As far as authoring tools, I've used Authoringware DVD Junior and Ulead DVD Workshop extensively, and have also tested out Sonic MyDVD and DVDit, Spruce Technologies SpruceUp, MTC2000 DVD-Motion, ULead DVD Plug-In, SoFo DVD-A and DVDLab. My experience is that to be assured of the best MPEG image quality, you need the added control and flexibility of a stand-alone encoder. I have not been satisfied with any built-in encoder I've encountered yet.
Due to MPEG-LA licensing fees, an encoder would add to the price even if the author got no additional money, and since I've already using CCE Basic and TMPGEnc 2.5 for my MPEG needs, for my own part I'm glad that DVDLab isn't bundled with an encoder.
That's right jbeale,
Oscar did some other appz like Real-Draw Pro,DVDMenuStudio,Paint Brush....
Before DVDLab was released I did emailed Oscar about DVDLab & he was very kind to explain a bit more about it.At that time I was looking for some real time transcoders because I'm making program that will do full transcoding, spliting stereo source wav to 6 mono 16/48 + LFE enabled/splited from the original source. Why?
It is a lot of work to get the final result but imagine source from DVR comes stereo put it in the app get 6 encode it DTS,AC3 Dolby.....
The actual concept of DVDLab its based on stability, speed, easy of use, fully customizable... Thats why there is no encoders & fancy things.
Oscar knows that anyone who is serious about DVD Authoring will look for their best final product,so to buy the licence CCE or TMPGEnc. to be integrated in DVDLab will increase the price of the app.So you choose the encoder.Another thing thats been discused in this forum is about the AC3 encoder built in in DVD-A.
I'm just so sick of this.If you have a closer look you will see that the integration of AC3 Dolby encoder in DVD-A it's got bugs.
DVD-A it is nice but TOO FAR AWAY FROM PROFESSIONAL DVD AUTHORING PROGRAM as it is advertised.Anyway that is my opinion which may be diferent from everyone else.
I just cant wait for Adobe Encore.
