Well, since ALL monitors are external now a days (wirh very few exceptions of a monitor & everything else as one) what do you mean? It's for hooking up to something that supports DVI. Some PC monitors support this. I think some projectors support this too. Of course you can also get DVI to VGA converts to hook it up to something that supports a VGA connector (monitor, projector, etc).

I gues what i'm saying is that if you don't know what it is and have no problems with whatever you bought/own, then you don't need to worry about it. :)

Primarily used to make digital video connection to LCD monitors. This permits video card to control each pixel on monitor giving a sharper image, same goes for projectors that support it.

Some "dual headed" video cards have one port as a regular anolog VGA port (15 pin) and the other as a new DVI port. In my case I have a dual monitor setup and both monitors use analog VGA connectors(one is a regular CRT and the other is an LCD monitor).

So... in order to use the second monitor I had to purchase a DVI to VGA connector.

So... now... why exactly did you need to know this? Was my guess relevant to your (unstated) needs?
