So, you get your posts deleted, call someone a name and you want to come here to vent?

if this was a WoW forum we could use the "Ban Hammer of Doom". :D

I suspect that it has less to do with your opinion of HD and more to do with your crude language, "dude." Besides, anyone not even considering the transition to HD at this point is a Luddite. Hopefully your one and only post to this forum will be deleted, too.

I dunno. I kind of like the way my webcam video stuff looks... ;-)

Having met Chris at the NAB Vegas party last year I think your opinion of him is a bit over the top.
I wouldn't say I agree with some of his policies but then again I don't have to deal daily with some of the utter rubbish that floats around in cyberspace in this game.

What happens there is pretty fair and stops things from really getting out of hand. Though personally I would prefer to see threads get locked rather than deleted when they get out of hand. It's just as effective and doesn't feel like censorship.

2- Your post probably got deleted either because of:

A- You flamed somebody, or a group of people. Personal attacks are rude and not helpful. So don't do it.

B- You are evangelical about some unpopular position. If you aren't over-the-top with your tone, your post won't get deleted. So just watch your tone. But usually this just falls under A to begin with.

3- There are some cases where it makes sense to shoot and master on SD. Some TV series currently being broadcast do this... and they have budgets in excess of $300k per half hour. (It's because the animation or visual effects costs a lot more to do in HD... and if it's a kid's show, it'll take a long while before they are broadcast in HD.)

And there are also a lot of cases where it makes sense to shoot and master on HD. For a lot of shows, the added cost is very low. And if you said something like this on Dvinfo, it would be cool and that post won't get deleted.

4- Anyways... not to be condescending or anything, but I hope you learn your lesson and learn to be civil. It's reasonable to want to vent... but don't go around calling people names (e.g. don't call Chris Hurd a turd). Got it?

Dave007 wasn't deleted because he won't consider HD, and personal attacks are the *only* way you can be banned so quickly from DVinfo.net. DVinfo.net has the highest signal to noise ratio in our industry, IMO, and it's because Chris doesn't tolerate BS for very long at all.

when HD hand-cam camera prices drop the the same prices as SD hand-cam prices, then i'll consider it.

Ok I am a newbie to the video making world. I do enjoy and hope to get much better as time goes by. I do have one question though? What is a Luddite and how do we come by that name.
Just curious.
And my name ain't George
farss wrote on 12/10/2007, 5:37 AM
A definition of Luddite can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite

Pretty apt in the context I think.
Well to be fair I still shoot a lot of SD but I have no fear of HD and I sure don't see it taking bread off my table.

Now what does worry me is shooting 3D, that could really be a whole new world of pain unlike HD which is just more pixels 3D has many challenges. I'm hoping V9 Pro will be 3D enabled.

Ah! I'm glad you asked! - This is so much up my alley . . but anyway, before I get into "Duckie-Mode" from CSI, The Luddite Movement, named after Ned Ludd, was principally opposed to the wide-loom weaving machine. Circa 1810-19 This machine required far less craftsmanship and could make 1000x the amount of finished cloth that a hand weaver could. And those opposed to the move to faster, cheaper cloth were called Luddites. And, subsequently, anybody opposing "change" of ANY form is now termed a Luddite.

However, herein lies a bit of a connumdrum, irony and paradox. When this is applied to those that presently NOT upgrading to HD it may not be because they are inherently against HD - I'm not - but may not be able to afford it and the support infrastructure that it could depend on getting - I am in this second group! I want the best and that presently costs more R&D money than I am wanting to commit. The paradox here is that I am deciding NOT to purchase HD stuff, solely on the basis I can't afford too. I want it cheaper. I want to be able to make faster better videos on the equivalent of a wide-loom machine! Now, does that make me a Luddite? I wouldn't have thought so? But there again, history has always taken a "hit" when examples are paraded around as the truth. NOT seeing/appreciating the difference in the way something IS described as being "Well we all know the Earth is Flat!" could also be apprehended as being Luddite as well as those that say that people who don't upgrade to HD are Luddites too. Maybe there is more to this than meets the eye? But that would take the need to consider other possibilities.

Personally I want HD and an HD monitor and a HD production grader and FAST pc for it and HD chips and a HD wide angle and a HD so on and so on . . but I want it cheaper than what it presently is.

From what was most certainly an ill-promised thread, this is turning out to one of our better explorations of logic and history.

Interesting thread

Regards

Grazie

AHHH I got it now well I guess I am still a luddite because I do not have all the HD stuff to go all out HD I do however have an FX-1 that shoots HDV and I have Shot HDV then rendered to SD so does that make me a half luddite
John_Cline wrote on 12/10/2007, 6:22 AM
I didn't say that anyone who hasn't moved to HD is a Luddite. I said those not even considering HD are Luddites. The HD cat is out of the bag and we will all be shooting, delivering and watching HD sooner than later. If it doesn't currently fit into you business model, then that's perfectly OK. It will eventually.
PeterWright wrote on 12/10/2007, 6:29 AM
I don't think you're one of Ned Ludd's lads, Grazie. You're just waiting for the right time to get one of those wide-loom weavers.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 12/10/2007, 6:39 AM
when the wide-loom weavers are even cheaper, faster & all the early adopters have to pay to keep up with ME. :D Go-go-grazie!

The Kid - if you got - go see the Doctor.

John, my most humblest apologies - no you didn't say that.

Peter - Yes, timing and the bank balance IS everything!

Happy! It ain't the Weavers that are wide loomed? Sounds like they got big buttocks!!! - and yes I is going going going ...

I love how people get banned from another forum, come here, post their first post which is negative and then expect everyone to welcome with open arms...

to me that's funny.

Grazie..

Just think of all the money you're saving by skipping development iterations!!
If you wait long enough, you can skip the whole HDV format altogether and go straight to HD, 2K, or 4K. Does RED cost more in the UK?

"before I get into "Duckie-Mode" from CSI"

Duckie is actually a character on NCIS. Five trivia points if you can tell me the name of the character and the show which made the actor who portrays Duckie initially famous.

Now, if this sub-thread I started isn't completely "off-topic", I don't know what is...

OK, Grazie, you get the five points. David McCallum played "Illya Kuryakin" on The Man From Uncle from 1964-1968, although he was in a bunch of stuff before that. Five more points if you can tell me why his nickname is "Ducky" on NCIS.

Robert Vaughan, who played Napoleon Solo, is still acting, most recently in the British series, "Hustle."
