Just wanted an opinion or two. There is a guy--go look!--selling Panasonic DV100s
for $1800! Supposedly factory sealed with Pana warranty. Should I have my credit
card in my hand?
<M>
There's one on there that's up to $860 with 2 days left to go. Only has one review and that was because he bought and paid for something. I'd be leery. The one for $1500 looks like someone who has done lots of business and gotten good feedback. If you want it and have budgeted for it I'd place a bid. Less than 2 days to go.
Before you place any bid on ebay for anything of substantial value, first ask the seller if they'd be willing to go through escrow if you agree to pay the fees. And only use www.escrow.com!! Escrow is where after an auction, the buyer sends the money to a third party (escrow.com) They then contact the seller once the payment is verified, the seller then ships the product. Once the buyer recieves the product and the item is what was paid for, the escrow company then releases the money to the seller. I say only use www.escrow.com because there are a ton of escrow frauds out there and escrow.com is fully liscensed and endorsed by Ebay.
If the buyer refuses to go through escrow for any reason, do not buy!!! If you agree to pay the fees, then there is absolutly no reason a seller would not agree to escrow.
I never have gotten burned but almost. I am currently providing my local FBI with information on a particular auction scam that these people tried to take me with.
Remember the age old saying "If it seems too good to be true..."
Don't do it!!!! I almost got sucked in when it was the sony pd-150 that was the hot item on e-bay. I won the bid and had the money in hand - went to western union to fire the money off and they recommended I not go through with it - and that they see it every day - people sending money to some unlisted location outside the country - you won't get your camera - and if this is legit and they do send a camera - it will likely be damaged!
If its to good to be true - IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!!!!
Unless you talk with these people and get some info on them and a reference - it's a scam!
I just used a userid that my brother had but never uses to "buy one". The guy emailed me directions to send money Western Union. I replied back and asked if there were any other payment methods and asked about escrow. He replied back and said he only takes Western Union and he would not go through escrow. For those of you who don't know, Western Union is the least safe way to send money, next to stuffing cash into an envelope.
This guy is making a pathetic attempt at fraud............
This is rather funny actually. You should read this guy's emails. First he was all excited and then when I told him that I ended all of the auctions so that he wouldn't fraud anyone, he started whining like an 8 year old.
This guy stopped replying to my emails. I even offered to buy one of the cameras and pay for all others to be relisted if he could prove to me that all was legit.
Well I then went back and looked and he relisted them all again! Relentless he is!
Well, I've had enough fun messing with him myself. I will be warning Ebay now and let them stop him.
Also watch out for "too good to be true" websites-- there's dozens that are listed on sites like streetprices.com, and most of them are in Brooklyn. They sell grey market goods for a very low price, but the scam is that they remove all the accessories, then do a "follow up call" where they "verify" your order. At this point, they try to sell you back the accessories at hugely inflated prices that total as much as the original camera, or more. If you refuse to buy the accessories, they never charge your card and you never get your camera. I almost fell for it, then looked up the company and found ALL SORTS of bad news about it. I ended up getting my camera full price from a reputable reseller in my town. I had it the next day, no hassles and it was worth every penny.
Now the camera is on sale from "studio exchange" for a mere $3200, but it is the same picture, the same boxes on the same stairs, full of DVX 100s! This guy is
ballsy!
In addition to what Mike said, some companies like Bilibi.com will go ahead and charge your credit card after you agree to buy some worthless tripod or cam case (because you think you're still saving hundreds). Then when you call several days later to check on your order because they haven't sent you the promised tracking number they insist you buy their warranty for $400 or their lens' that come in a beautiful corinthian velour case, you tell them, that's enough!!!, and they're suddenly "out of stock". Okay, okay that "you" was me and it took them almost 4 weeks to reimburse my credit card! I did wind up getting a great deal on e-bay from an individual selling pre-ordered new cams but I would have felt a lot more secure if I would have used Sr C's idea of using an escrow payment. Next time I will for sure.
