Easy way to export subclips?

Folks -

I was noddling around with Vegas 5.0b this weekend and I was trying to find an easy way to export/extract subclips that I have created from larger events.

Is there an easier way than ceating a subclip, importing it to a track, deleting the original, and then doing a 'render as'? I must be missing something...

If you simply want them in a new project, you can copy the media pool to the other project.

You can do this? Copy from one veggie's media pool to another? I must have missed something because I couldn't figure out how to do this either. I had to save a copy of the original veggie under a new name, then delete all the tracks leaving just the media pool. This leaves you out in the cold if you want to mix subclips from two seperate projects, though.

Yes you can do this. Requires having two instances of Vegas open and that everything you want transferred to be in a folder in the media pool. Then just drag this folder to the media pool in the other instance.

I've never been able to figure out how to copy media from the media pool in one instance of Vegas to the media pool in another instance of Vegas either...

Help us out, Edward.

I just tried dragging folders from one instance to another. It doesn't work for me. (5.0b to 5.0b)

Okay, it does work. You have to copy the folder from the first instance to "Media Bins" in the second instance.

Thanks,

Guys -

This is great for migrating between one instance and another, but what if I want to create completely stand alone clips (like for a library of stock footage)?
jetdv wrote on 7/6/2004, 1:35 PM
If you want completely standalone clips, you won't be using "Sub-clips" anyway (as they are simply pointers to the original file). You WOULD need to render the individual pieces into separate files. Then I would browse to them via Vegas' explorer window.

Yep, you literally have to drop it on top of the word "Media Bins".

As long as you've not done anything to the media on the timeline, rendering to a new track is just a straight copy with no generation loss.

Okay, next question:

Now that I've copied the subclips from one project to the next, I need to copy a couple of tracks over. Let's say I did bunch of work setting up effects and keyframes and such compositing a few clips together. Now, I want to modify it a little and use it in another project. I can't render it to video because if I do that I can't edit it. And I can't start a new project because the destination project is already in existance(or perhaps I need segments from multiple source projects). Is there any hope for this, or do I manually have to try to recreate the effect and timing?

I have an idea to get seperate subclips into there own seperate files. Im not sure if it works yet, I have not tried it myself, but here it goes:

Mark all your subclips from your main file(s) on the trimmer. From the media bin, start placing all the subclips in sequence on the timeline as if you were making a project. Go to file, save as, and save the .veg file and check the "copy and trim media with file" checkbox. This, I believe, saves the files seperately as they are with what you had marked on the timeline... I know it works with seperate media files, but im not sure if it works with seperate subclips from one main file. Has anyone tried this? Is my theory completely off?

Grazie,
As I already mentioned in my post, that's not the question. I know I can do that; I've done it before. The new project is already started. I want those tracks in the new project, not a blank project with just those tracks.

Now, obviously I can make a new project, make the changes in the new project, render to AVI, and add it as source media to the real project, but I really would like everything modifiable in one project.

Basic answer is.. you cannot copy tracks from one project to another. I would seriously like to be able to do that as well.

You're getting closer... What he (and I ... and others) would like to do is pick up a track (or several tracks with parent/child relationships) INCLUDING the track motion, compositing mode, track-level effects, etc. (the track in it's entirety) and paste it in the new project.

Apparently... no can do... :-(

2G .. I'm still going to "push" the Save as NewProj.veg option. Yes I realise and understand the things you say and present limitations - having a supplemental veggie maybe just maybe a way you can "store" what you want and then open up a new instance of Vegas to do a swapping or pruning - yeah?

At the end of the day maybe you may wish to send a Product Suggestion up the ladder . .

. . . the more we discuss .. the more "others" will listen . .. the more others will listen the more "features" maybe be included in the next version . . it'll all help to make and keep Vegas competitive . . this Forum isn't just for us Users to share and compare . . it's a neat way of doing a Customer Survey and open Suggestion box too!

. . . . neat eh ;-) ?

So let's keep talking and I'll keep responding . . .. .
