Edit Audio

boomhower wrote on 12/17/2004, 7:02 PM
When I right click on an audio track in VV5 and choose "open in audio editor" I get a pop up that says no editor has been specified in preferences....problem is, I don't see a place in the preferences to choose one. Once I find the place to specify one, can I use Acid from w/in VV5? (I have it also but I'm not sure if I can get to it from w/in vv.....If not, I was under the impression that VV5 by itself could do some audio editing. Am I wrong on that one?

By the way, I have ordered the Vegas 5 Editing Workshop Book (Spotted Eagle) and it should be here next week so I'll try not to bother the forum population too much with easy questions after that. In the meantime, I'm pretty fired up about the program and can't stand not trying to learn while I wait on "the book"

Thanks,

in v5 goto preferences, then hit the tap AUDIO
under audio, youll see preferred audio editor... browse for your prog there.... (sound forge, etc...)
you could have acid be your editor... dont really know why you'd want to use that though....

Thanks....I surely plan on having fun with the new setup! I'm having fun now even without having all of the new buttons figured out....I fear what might happen after reading SE's Workshop book....My wife has already started looking into a 12 step program for Vegas users :)

On a serious note....I have loaded a project into VV5 that I've been using as my test project as I learn the new setup. When I play the preview, I'm hearing sound artifacts that sound like beeps (think R2D2) at random intervals. The project has one video track, one voice and one music track. When I mute the sound tracks on the timelines the beeps go away during preview. When I open the sound tracks in the trimmer, I can't hear any beeps. Where are the beeps coming from???

maybe it is R2D2.... trying to tell you something.. listen to him!

one idea... see what plugins you have on the two audio tracks...
try removing them all...
you said if you mute them both the beeps go away.. have you tried muting one, then the other?

again, i think its a plugin that is acting funnyyy
...
just an idea...

The bleeps could be dropouts from the tape.
A few tips:
Vegas is by itself an excellent audio editor, it's only when you need audio microsurgery that you should need an external editor like SF7 (much better than Acid for editing).

To work with audio turning off "Quantise to Frames" really helps, just remember to turn it on before editing video.

You can zoom the waveforms by Shift+Up/Down Arrow, really helps to see the nasties. To get rid of them insert volume envelope, put a node just before, just after and right in the middle of the blip, pull middle node down to -infinity. For longer bleeps you might need two points in the middle to give a longer cut. Do thing is much better than a straight cut as you can introduce nasty glitches.

Hope this helps. In general if you're new to Vegas, believe me, it's pretty rare that you need to go outside Vegas for audio.

The bleeps could also be from a demo plugin. Did you install any and are running them? Do they sound like actual "Beeps?" or just silent spots?

Thanks for the replies...

Spot: I don't have any audio plugins yet and they are actual "beeps" ....the tones are varied and follow no particular pattern. In fact, I can mute the music track, leave the voice track open then go to an empty area of the voice track and I can still hear the beeps. Stranger thing is they are not in the same spot each time. That is to say each time I preview they show up in different areas of the timeline with no signature showing in the event. If I mute all but the video track they go away.

I haven't been able to duplicate the scenario....I've worked on other projects tonight with no problems...even created a DVD using DVDA2 so I'm probably going to just file this under "Twilight Zone" for now.

Thanks again........................I really appreciate the input from everyone.

I do have something wierd like that happening too but it's not 'in' the audio. If my project audio is different to the media audio I seem to get the odd few 'beeps' but this I'm almost certain is when the clock rate of the external audio box is being changed. None of this is actually in the audio. When the audio is rendered out there's nothing there of cause.
The other trap is Windoz 'sounds'. These get sent to the audio device at 16/48 I think, so again you may find the sample rate is being changed around all the time, I've gone through and deleted all systems sounds. Also there's another issue with systems sounds. Don't know the finer points but I use ASIO exclusively but the systems sounds don't so again everything is getting switched around.
This might explain what's happening to you.
I've learn't one thing, be very cautious of thinking 'this has never happened before', it's quite likely it has, you just never noticed it!.
