Edit without rerendering?

Is it possible to edit a Cineform AVI and just "save" it without having to rerender?

If you DO have to rerender, are you losing quality in the process and what should you rerender to? Standard AVI?

I've seen programs that say they allow you to edit and save without rerendering. Any help appreciated. Oh, I have Vegas 8.0

Thanks.

As long as you have not modified the Cineform file in any way other than making simple cut-only edits then, yes, Vegas will "smart render" the video without recompression assuming that the render settings are exactly the same as the source Cineform file.

Yes, "cuts-only" edits would be what I would do. So when I "render as", what do I choose as "save as type"? Also, what "template" do I use?

Thanks.

It depends on the specs of your source footage. Your render settings must match the source footage exactly.

Thanks for your help. I actually did something odd and read the instructions (gasp!) and played around with it. My "rerendered" clip used the same codec, but the only diiference is that my original AVI is 1280X720X24, while the rerendered is 1280X720X32.

What is the difference in the "24" and the "32"?

Smart-rendering codecs include SD DV, mpeg 2 (.m2t or .mxf) and Cineform. Be aware that if you are smart-rendering mpeg2 with a .m2t extension that the audio still goes through multiple decompression/recompression generations which affect audio quality even though the video is unchanged. DV and Cineform codec stuff is the same both video and audio quality wise.

24 and 32 are the bit depths.
When you've got it all right, the preview screen will display "No Recompression Required" continuously, and the frame clock will spin like crazy . . .
