Editing AVI format to change to VCD Format

djlo2000 wrote on 11/6/2001, 9:16 AM
Hi,
I have Vegas Factory 2.0 and when I go to open media file, I try to pull an AVI media and get an error message that the format is not supported. I've gone to the help and it says that AVI format is compatible. I did notice that the AVI format has a DIVX code in it. Does that affect the Vegas Factory from making any changes? Please help,,

Thanks

I too would like to know the answer to your question. Are you running in demo mode?

My situation is a little different, but maybe our solution will be the same: I just downloaded and installed VideoFactory 2.0a. I am running it in "demo" so far because I want to prove it will work satisfactorily before I commit the money. I am unable to import any of my previously "captured" video (which I captured using MPEG1 format on a Hauppauge PVR USB). Everytime I try, it says "unable to load, not compatible format" or something like that.

So, is this a limitation of the "DEMO" mode?
---------
By the way, VideoFactory does NOT recognize my Hauppauge PVR USB capture device, so I can't capture anlalog video directly into VideoFactory (like I'd like to do)! Is this also a "demo mode" limitation? If not, what decent quality USB analog capture device WILL VideoFactory natively recognize?

Any help is appreciated.

Not being able to load MPEG files into the timeline *is* a demo limitation. When you register the full version, you can install the MPEG plugin which will allow editing of MPEG files. However, it is not an ideal format to work. Real-time preview is very choppy. AVI using the DV codec is the preferred format.

DivX, Windows Media, Real Media, and any other "protected" formats cannot be edited in VF, but you can render to these formats.

Hi,
I have the full version of VideoFactory and it still will not read my AVI file. I guess we do have a similar problem with VideoFactory opening a file. As far as your Hauppauge PVR USB capture device, i'm not sure if it's a demo issue or not. I do hope that someone from Sonic Foundry reads this soon before I go crazy trying to figure this out. I have the Intel Pro PC Camera with video in on the back of the camera. I haven't tried that yet but I do hope to try it that way soon.

Jimcho,
How do you go about rendering it??

Most of these formats are built into VF except DivX. You can render to DivX simply by installing the codec. It will appear in the list of AVI codecs. Note that only the older DivX codec works. The newer OpenDivX 4.0 codec does not work in VF.

However, Windows Media 8 provides superior quality for the same bit rate. And I believe maximum bit rate has been increased, so it should provide very good quality.

DIVX (http://www.divx.com/) is a newer compression scheme based on MPEG-4. I don't use it myself, however downloading the CODEC from the above site may allow other applications to use it. This is similar to installing POWER DVD which allows Microsoft's Media Player to play MPEG-2, which due to copyright issues otherwise can't.

Before getting too excited read all the negatives about DIVX from this site:

In order to play/edit any video MPEG in Video Factory you need to register the MPEG plug-in which also requires registering the product.
