editing DVD content with Vegas 5

The current project that i am working on requires that I Rip content off of a homemade dvd ( a dvd made with a vhs to dvd device ). The dvd I have been able to rip with Nero Recode as a MP4 file extention which so far i have been unable to open in Vegas 5. When i attempt to open the files it gives me a message of quicktime that tells me that something loded wrong or the right codec was not found and the computer freezes. So what i need to understand is either how to open and edit a MP4 file in vegas 5 or how to rip a dvd onto another video content such as a good quality AVI that Vegas can read if it cannot read a MP4 file format. If anyone has any input or ideas please help.

Thanks for your input and advice,
Gotmatt

Ok, Ill give this a shot.

The reason it wont load the MP4 is because Nero Recode uses HE-AAC for audio and that is currently not supported in Qucktime which is why it wont open up.

The best way to edit the DVD is to use DVDecrypter or another DVD ripping program and then use DVD2Avi to extract the audio as wave. Then change the extention of the DVD files from .vob to .mpg and load it up on the timeline and edit away.

Mp4 is like Mpeg-2 which is meant as a delivery format rather than an editing format.

Realize that I never had a computer until summer of 2001 so I tend to go at these things from a less techno direction...as a one person video prod/edit shop i did the same as you for one of the wealthiest dudes in the county...DVD to VHS conversion...I have a radio shack CyberHome DVD player running in to my JVC SR-VS20 with that running out to a TV monitor...I simply played the DVD thru the VHS side of the VS20...seeing the picture on the TV...and recorded the DVD on to a VHS tape. Then within the SR20, I dubbed the VHS to a MiniDV tape. Then i took that into the vegas5 for a little editing. From there you can do anything...DVD author, back out to miniDV or VHS...whatever. No need for complicated decoding, recoding or any of that. the quality/resolution stayed pretty much consistent throughout.
Hope this helps
I'm repeatedly amazed at the number of calls i get and get paid for doing little things like this that the average homeowner could do with just a little extra hooking up of normal playback equipment...though some players do not have the playthrough capability and that stymies it right there.
Bonne Chance
