Editing footage from Flip Mino HD with Vegas

Hello,

I have Vegas Movie Studio 8.0. I want to know if my Vegas product is able to edit footage from my new Flip Mino HD camcorder, and retain the HD quality and 16:9 aspect ratio. If not, is there another Vegas product I can upgrade to?

(According to the box, the Flip Mino HD camcorder produces video that is:
DIGITAL VIDEO FORMAT: HD 720p (1280 x 720, 16:9 widescreen) at 30 fps
VIDEO RESOLUTION: H.264 video and AAC audio in MP4 file format)

I am just a recreational user of Vegas so this is all a little confusing to me.

Many thanks in advance for your help!!

You need the Platinum edition of Vegas to take advantage of HD resolutions.

However, even with Platinum, or Pro versions, Flip Mino's kind of codec will give you trouble. It will be really slow to edit, and it is very crash-prone. Your best bet is to buy the $129 Cineform NeoSCENE package to transcode the MOV files to lossless AVI, that Vegas can easily edit. This will of course cost you as much as your camera.

The other option is to use proxy files: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/12/12/proxy-editing-with-sony-vegas
However, this is a cumbersome method, and if you have very long projects it might crash during export of the original files too. It's something to try though.
