You shouldn't have to upgrade. However, you haven't told what format your HD video is in.

HD 720p tells us the size of the video and whether it's progressive or linterlaced, however, it doesn't tell us which codec the video is in. Common options are HDV or AVCHD.

For a lot of people, the first step in the workflow is to convert their HD footage to another codec to make it easier to edit. Cineform is one such codec. You should fare well with that.

Camera is a Panasonic HVX 170.
Format is MFX.
I have Ray Light Ultra to get it to the timeline.
But every now and then Vegas seems to freeze.
This makes me wonder if the HD is taxing it to the limit.
Another thing I've discovered is that files can look very dark.
