Editing M4V files

Was handed 4GB of mystery .m4v files (two folders full of 43mb files) to include a few seconds from them in a project. Not sure what shot them. I think one of those "Flip" type cameras. The included very-limited viewer that could stitch them together suggested it was shot with a Sanyo product of some sort.

The files would not drop onto the Vegas 9c timeline until I added ".mp4" to the end of each file. They then dropped into Vegas fine and I was able to edit and export to .mov for our Media 100. These are some flavor of 720p mpeg4.

Might help somebody.

You might want to download and install the x264vfw codec. This might make editing them easier. Otherwise I would convert them to a format that is easier to edit like MXF, CineForm, Huffyuv, Lararith, MJPEG, etc.

.m4v is .mp4/avc with chapter support.

Some .m4v files from iTunes were DRM'd and won't open at all. But renaming .m4v to .mp4 is always the first thing to try.

.m4v encoded in HandBrake, for instance, opens straightaway in Vegas without renaming.

Regardless of the extension, the audio may not open if the Quicktime bug is present.
