Editing mixed media

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I`d like to say that Sony seems to be the most user friendly editing program out there ..so how about a round of applause ! ! Every key was thought out and i`m just like ..."oh nice " everytime I discover a shortcut to maneuvering myself on the timeline..ok back to the point..help!!

I guess i'd consider myself a novice at this point but yet to be an expert. Especially when were talking about Codecs, resolutions, and rendering settings.

I`m editing a music video that was shot with two HD cams (16:9) 30 fps in front of a green screen for the most part. Besides the fact that one of them had a bit too much gain and messes up my keying I've got an issue with old media imported and filmed in SD (720: 480:24).

My project is 1920:1080:32

I`ve got black bars top and bottom but the old dv media overlaps them when rendered..what needs to be done for a consistant output...I`ll probably send back to tape and convert to betcam for tv music stations but would like to have it on the web as well.

Thanks for helping !

X

I may sound stupid at first but once I got it, i`m good !

If your project settings (File/Properties) are widescreen, I'd expect there to be black bars at the sides with 4:3 SD footage .... anyway, to make the SD the same as the 16:9 , click the pan/crop icon on the event, then rightclick and select Match Output aspect. This will crop to the right shaped rectangle within the 4:3 frame, and you can move it up or down a bit if you require ...

This should make everything the same "shape", but if it's lower resolution, you may have issues with pixellation.

instead of that could I simply mask it to avoid pixellation ?

Any pixellation is simply from putting 480 lines into 1080 - if you're ouputting SD DVD it shouldn't show once rendered, but if outputting HD it might.

Putting it out as widescreen DVD shouldn't need any mask - what is your intended output?

To avoid pixellation you'll have to make sure you don't increase the size at all. That means you'll end up with it being a little 655x480 rectangle in the middle of the screen. Is that what you want?

One other thought strikes me ... you didn't mention whether the SD material is 4:3 or widescreen. SD widescreen isn't quite 16:9 so it doesn't fit in your HD project perfectly. However, it's so close that using the match aspect ratio function won't resize it as much as 4:3 footage will be.

thanks peter, chienworks,

The desired output will be Mini HDV Tape (to Betacam later), Web and DVD..

I wasn`t sure if the old material was wide or standard (ie. the 4:3) but the rezize only takes off 75 pixels from each vertical extremity..not a crazy problem at this point but im just after the best quality possible..

ok so now my concern is the boundaries of generated media (ie. Text) I've got expanding letters but they cut off sooner than the actually video frame ..any solutions ?

again,

HD Project

ps. do the safe zones do anything other than serve as a guide ?

No.
And you can change them.
