Editing settings

I seem to make lots of small mistakes when assembling my videos quickly, overlaps extra clips etc. Is there an editing setting that acts as if the clips were dominoes on a table? Like an added clip would push the clip in front of it not go over the top, kind of like ripple edit but in both directions. This would allow quick assembly then I could go back and do fades, dissolves fx etc. Not sure of my description but would appreciate any help.

1- you can turn on auto-ripple.

2- If you audition clips in the trimmer, you can insert edit them into the timeline. (I can't remember the shortcut offhand.)

I use the trimmer and the snap to cursor button, I did find some of my problem was the double click media loads to timeline. Found the change to double click loads to trimmer, this helps because some of my errors or from previewing media and
accidentally loading on top of my timeline.
