Editing technique

What is the preferred method of editing? E.g. I could capture the video and then let the Capture prog split the media into clips and then arrange them in the timeline
Or
I could capture it as one single clip, put it into the trimmer and pick out the bits I want into the timeline
Or
I could mark the bits I want as regions in the trimmer and create Sub-clips and then arrange them in the timeline
Or
I could paste the whole lot into the time line and then split/delete or re-arrange as l want

whats the best sequence

I don't think there's a preferred method, just whatever suits you. I capture clips, add the ones that are worth using (a small percentage) to the timeline one at a time and then split them to leave the useful footage (an even smaller percentage). I firmly believe that Sturgeon's Law (90% of everything is crap) is very applicable to video footage - it doesn't matter what approach you take, you're just trying to separate those few minutes of watchable video from the rest of the dross and put them into a sensible order.

It is a matter of preference. When I'm capturing one of my tv shows, I generally capture in segments to cut the bulk of commercials out then. Then final edit each segment to remove the twenty or so frames from the front and tail ends and render that segment. After all the segments have been completely edited and rendered at that point I'll put the segments together to make one video file. Though I have to render twice, I simply hate scanning through fifteen minutes of frames. I'd rather let the computer do the work. With Tivo I don't have to worry about not capturing part of a show.

I am also interested in what method others use especially for HDV.
I have been inclined to open the files in the trimmer and mark in and out points to select a section which I drag to the timeline but I note that double click to open in trimmer is not a default setting so I suspect there is another more popular method.
One can often invest a lot of time in a method which seems obvious, only to have someone come along and show them a better method which was not obvious when you started out.
Having got all the clips on the timeline what is the best method of adjusting out and in points at a scene change?
If the material is one large clip in correct sequence is it better to put this straight to the timeline and then address scene changes and deletions?
The manual tells you how things work but does not appear to recommend any methodology.
